2022 Team Quarterfinals Events Announced

April 7, 2022 by Tyler Watkins

On April 7, 2022, CrossFit announced the Team workouts for the month-long Quarterfinals event, which will run from Friday, April 8 through Sunday April 10. There are five workouts in total.

The Individual portion of the Quarterfinals has wrapped. The 2021 CrossFit Games champions Tia-Clair Toomey and Justin Medeiros led the women and men worldwide. Guilherme Malheiros and Kara Saunders finished in second place.

Notably, CrossFit two-time Fittest Woman on Earth®, Annie Thorisdottir, will compete in the Teams Division with Khan Porter, Lauren Fisher, and Tola Morakinyo as Team Reykjavik. They’ll of course have stiff competition against four-time CrossFit Games winner Rich Froning’s legendary Team CrossFit Mayhem Freedom, which has won five CrossFit Games since 2015. Keep reading for all five workouts.

Event 1

Though the equipment list is small, this year’s events bring new movements for the teams tested in the Quarterfinals. The Dumbbell was used for hang power cleans and shoulder-to-overhead in the 2021 Quarterfinals. Neither dumbbell front squats nor dumbbell front rack walking lunges has yet to be in the Teams division. Single-leg squats are the only repeated movement from last year in this workout. Handstand walks are brand new and will surely be a significant test for the bulk of the teams.

For time:

  • 30 dumbbell front squats (M1) + 3 handstand walks (F1)
  • 30 dumbbell front squats (F1) + 3 handstand walks (M1)
  • 30 dumbbell front squats (M2) + 3 handstand walks (F2)
  • 30 dumbbell front squats (F2) + 3 handstand walks (M2)

Then,

  • 4 dumbbell front-rack lunge lengths (M1) + 3 handstand walks (F1)
  • 4 dumbbell front-rack lunge lengths (F1) + 3 handstand walks (M1)
  • 4 dumbbell front-rack lunge lengths (M2) + 3 handstand walks (F2)
  • 4 dumbbell front-rack lunge lengths (F2) + 3 handstand walks (M2)

Then,

  • 30 single-leg squats (M1) + 3 handstand walks (F1)
  • 30 single-leg squats (F1) + 3 handstand walks (M1)
  • 30 single-leg squats (M2) + 3 handstand walks (F2)
  • 30 single-leg squats (F2) + 3 handstand walks (M2)

(2 x 35-lb dumbbells for Women, 2 x 50-lb dumbbells for Men)

1 handstand walk/dumbbell lunge length = 25 ft (7.62 m)

Time cap: 20 minutes

Event 2

Again we see another new movement for the teams with the shuttle run. A great deal of controversy has sprung up over the past week due to the shuttle runs for the individuals.

Some athletes misunderstood what constitutes one rep in the shuttle run, and so they submitted scores with accidental half the reps. Everyone should be sure to read workout standards closely.

For time:

  • 15 synchronized line-facing burpees
  • 2 shuttle runs (Pair 1)
  • 2 shuttle runs (Pair 2)
  • 20 synchronized line-facing burpees
  • 3 shuttle runs (Pair 1)
  • 3 shuttle runs (Pair 2)
  • 25 synchronized line-facing burpees
  • 4 shuttle runs (Pair 1)
  • 4 shuttle runs (Pair 2)
  • 30 synchronized line-facing burpees
  • 5 shuttle runs (Pair 1)
  • 5 shuttle runs (Pair 2)
  • 25 synchronized line-facing burpees
  • 4 shuttle runs (Pair 1)
  • 4 shuttle runs (Pair 2)
  • 20 synchronized line-facing burpees
  • 3 shuttle runs (Pair 1)
  • 3 shuttle runs (Pair 2)
  • 15 synchronized line-facing burpees
  • 2 shuttle runs (Pair 1)
  • 2 shuttle runs (Pair 2)

Time cap: 20 minutes

  • Workout Submission Due: Friday, April 8th at 12:00 p.m. PST

Event 3

The “Heavy” lifts tested in 2021 were front squats and snatches. Barbell clean & jerks were omitted last year and will make this workout more of a CrossFit classic. Teams with superior power output will finish this at blazing speed.

Clean & jerk

MM then FF:

  • 5-5, clean & jerks, weight 1
  • 4-4, clean & jerks, weight 2
  • 3-3, clean & jerks, weight 3
  • 2-2, clean & jerks, weight 4
  • 1-1, clean & jerk, weight 5

Female Weights: 125, 145, 155, 165, 185 lbs (56, 65, 70, 75, 83 kgs)

Male Weights: 185, 205, 225, 245, 275 lbs (83, 93, 102, 111, 125 kgs)

Time cap: 7 minutes (for each pair)

  • Workout Description/ Standards/ Score Card: Workout 3 Scorecard
  • Workout Submission Due: Saturday, April 9th at 12:00 p.m. PST

Event 4

The rope was another piece of equipment criticized by the community during the Individual Quarterfinals. Videos were submitted in which some portion of the rope climb was not visible on camera, a clear violation of CrossFit’s rules. Some affiliates are not outfitted to accommodate this workout due to the spacing requirements in CrossFit’s floor plans. This will likely remain true for the teams.

While very familiar to veteran teams, Synchro toes-to-bar is also a new addition to Team Quarterfinals. This workout will be a heavy breather and test a team’s ability to stick together through deep fatigue.

For time, starting with the women:

Format: FF/MM

  • 40 synchro toes-to-bars
  • 30 synchro box jumps
  • 20 synchro alternating dumbbell snatches
  • 10 rope climbs (total)
  • 20 synchro alternating dumbbell snatches
  • 30 synchro box jumps
  • 40 synchro toes-to-bars

When the women have finished, the men complete the workout.

Female Weight: 50-lb (22.50-kg) dumbbell, 24-in (61-cm) box, 15-ft rope

Male Weight: 70-lb (32.5-kg) dumbbell, 30-in (76 cm) box, 15-ft rope

Time cap: 30 minutes

  • Workout Demo: Workout 4 Demo
  • Workout Description/ Standards/ Score Card: Workout 4 Scorecard
  • Workout Submission Due: Saturday, April 9th at 12:00PM PT

Event 5

Event 5 is sure to be a favorite of the community. This “Fran”-esque workout tests gymnastics and weightlifting in a concise duration. Teams will need to strategize by precisely placing their athletes to optimize time. At the end of it all, this event truly comes down to each athlete’s willingness to deal with a burn and their mastery of Ring Muscle Ups.

In relay style, with one athlete working at a time, complete the following for time:

  • 27 thrusters, weight 1
  • 21 chest-to-bar pull-ups
  • 15 thrusters, weight 2
  • 9 ring muscle-ups

Order: M1/F1/M2/F2

Female Weight: 65, then 95 lbs (29, then 43 kgs)

Male Weight: 95, then 135 lbs (43, then 61 kgs)

Time cap: 20 minutes

  • Workout Demo: Workout 5 Demo
  • Workout Description/ Standards/ Score Card: Workout 5 Scorecard
  • Workout Submission Due: Sunday, April 10th at 12:00 p.m. PST
