Chris Yip Smashes WP Deadlift World Record

21 years old. 69 kilogram bodyweight. 305 kilogram deadlift.

Earlier this week, Australian Chris Yip pulled a 305 kilogram (672.4 pounds) deadlift at just 69 kilograms bodyweight. That is the heaviest raw deadlift ever recorded by a powerlifter in that weight class in World Powerlifting (WP) — an international powerlifting federation.

This new world record Yip lifted in sumo was 15 kilograms (33 pounds) more than the previous world record of 290 kilograms (639.3 pounds) held by Kristos Papanotis, also of Australia. Papanotis hit that lift at the Adelaide Cup on September 7th, 2015 in his home country, according to Open Powerlifting.

If you have not yet have the opportunity to see Yip’s absolutely colossal pull — on a stiff bar — you can do so now below, courtesy of his Instagram page:

This lift appeared to be quite smooth for Yip aside from a slight hiccup as he locked out his knees. The strain of the lift showed itself in his neck, as expected for a lift 33 pounds heavier than a record that had held for the last five years, but his facial expression looked calm throughout.

The 21-year-old Yip’s deadlift was just barely shy of four and a half times his bodyweight. That’s quite the accomplishment for a powerlifter who has thus far only competed in a single sanctioned event prior to this one — a first-place performance at the Powerlifting Australia (PA) Avia Performance Winter Open on August 11th, 2019. Here were his stats at that event:

  • Squat — 187 kilograms (412.3 pounds)
  • Bench Press — 107 kilograms  (236 pounds)
  • Deadlift — 255 kilograms (562.2 pounds)
  • Total — 549 kilograms (1,210.3 pounds)

His total was 37 kilograms (81.6 pound) more than runner-up Edgar Degay’s total.

Yip has not made clear when he will compete in his next sanctioned event. However, when he does, we’ll see if he attempts to advance the world record event further.
