Tia-Clair Toomey Passes Mat Fraser With 30 CrossFit Games Event Wins

July 31, 2021 by Andrew Gutman

With a win in Event 11 at the 2021 CrossFit Games, Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr has claimed first in 30 Games events — the most ever. The previous record was 29, held by the now-retired five-time Fittest Man on Earth®, Mat Fraser, which she tied on Friday, July 30, 2021.

Toomey has won four CrossFit Games titles and is widely considered one of the greatest CrossFit athletes the sport has ever seen. She is also a 2016 Olympian, representing Australia at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro and a gold medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. With this latest notch in her weightlifting belt, there’s a strong case to be made that she is the definitive GOAT.

Individual Event 11 — Top Five Women

For Event 11, athletes were introduced to the pegboard for the first time at the 2021 Games. It was part of an AMRAP with dumbbell overhead squats and double-unders. Here is the full workout:

11-minute AMRAP:

  • 1 pegboard ascent
  • 7 single-arm dumbbell overhead squats, 50 pounds for women | 70 pounds for men
  • 5 heavy double-unders

With this win, Toomey-Orr now has 1,045 points at the 2021 Games. She has a handy lead of Laura Horvath with one more event on July 31, 2021, and a full day of competition on August 1.

The Era of Tia-Clair Toomey

Hailing from Australia, Toomey-Orr is best known for her absolute dominance in the sport of CrossFit. She made her CrossFit debut in 2013 and first appeared at a Games in 2015, where she placed second. Toomey-Orr made her second Games appearance a year later, placing second again.

That same year, Toomey-Orr represented Australia at the 2016 Olympic Games in Weightlifting in the Women’s 58-Kilogram class. She ended up in 14th but stuck with weightlifting and would eventually win a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Toomey-Orr’s first Games win came in 2017. She has won every CrossFit Games since. In the 2020 CrossFit Games, Toomey’s greatness was on full display. She won nine of the 12 events in the Finals, leaving the other four women that year fighting for second and third. Notably, she was a training partner of Fraser.

Currently, she is a part of PRVN Fitness, programmed by her husband, Shane Orr. She trains alongside other CrossFit greats Brooke Wells, Alec Smith, Will Moorad, and James Newbury. In 2020, Toomey-Orr also announced that she was getting into bobsledding, intending to represent Australia in the Winter Olympics.

Will She Win Five?

At the time this article was written, Toomey-Orr is still competing at the 2021 Games. If she wins — and there’s a strong chance she may — Toomey-Orr would tie Fraser’s all-time Games win record at five. Currently, she’s leading the women with 1,045 points, which is 196 points ahead of runner-up Laura Horváth. Toomey-Orr would further cement herself as the best women’s CrossFitter of all time with a fifth Games win.

BarBend will update this article with the Games results once the competition has concluded.
