1st Phorm Monster Games Results

July 17, 2024 by Scott Freymond

The 1st Phorm Monster Games went down in Joplin, MO, on July 12-14.

  • With 28 divisions, it has become one of the premier CrossFit events in the Midwest.

Games veteran Jacob Heppner and Jason Ansley, the co-director of the Masters CrossFit Games by Legends, programmed the event, which was a unique and entertaining test of fitness.

Having done the online qualifier, I have first-hand experience with their creativity and affinity for pushing athletes to their limits.

  • “We like to have fun,” Heppner told Morning Chalk Up after the online qualifiers. “Jason [Ansley] does a great job […] He’s the freaking man.”

But the live event is where they can really open up the toolbox.

This year’s Monster Games included distinctive movements like “Pogo Box Jump-Overs” and burpee shuttle runs.

The elite division athletes were also tested with target shooting and sandbag grunt work to elevate their heart rates.

  • This was one of Heppner’s contributions (the event was even called “Jacob Heppner”) and something he has become exceptional at since competing in the Tactical Games.

2023 CrossFit Games Rookie of the Year Olivia Kerstetter and 2024 Games Rookie Chris Ibarra made a celebrity appearance in the team competition.

In a post-event interview with commentator Lauren Kalil, the elite individual athletes shared their perspectives about hopping into a team event without training for it.

  • “Both of us are so competitive that I think we were like, ‘let’s try to kill each other and see who dies’…and I’m the one who died, so that was not fun,” said Kerstetter, who seemed to obviously be having fun.
  • “I had no idea what was going on behind me,” Ibarra shared on Instagram. “But I did fall a couple of times.”

Besides the show from Kerstetter and Ibarra, fans were treated to tight races in many divisions.

The weekend started in the pool with a swim and sandbag workout called “Michael Phelps,” followed by an Echo bike and run workout called “Lance Armstrong” two minutes later.

  • The competition really heated up with “Louie Simmons,” an elimination-style workout involving burpees over the bar and thrusters.

The three-day event concluded on Sunday afternoon with the finale, “Annie Thorisdottir,” a nod to one of the queens of CrossFit.
