Stellar Results — How Tia-Clair Toomey Competed In the 2023 CrossFit Open While Pregnant

March 9, 2023 by Phil Blechman

The 2023 CrossFit Open concluded on March 6, 2023, after three workouts across three weeks — the second test was a two-part workout. With scores from effectively four tests, the results are (unofficially) in, and six-time Fittest Woman on Earth® Tia-Clair Toomey, while pregnant, finished in 2,831st place out of a worldwide women’s field of over 100,000.

2023 CrossFit Open Results — Tia-Clair Toomey

Here are Toomey’s results* from each Open workout:

  • Workout 23.1 — 180 reps, 13,324th place
  • Workout 23.2A — 136 reps, 5,583rd place
  • Workout 23.2B — 195 pounds, 327th place
  • Workout 23.3 — 11:39, 243rd place

*Results are official.

Toomey published her full 23.3 workout performance on her YouTube channel. She navigated landing wall walks, double-unders, handstand push-ups, and barbell cycling with a large belly due to her pregnancy. For context, Toomey weighed approximately 154 pounds, heavier than her normal competition body weight of approximately 138 pounds.

Timing Toomey’s workout was 2012 Fittest Woman on Earth® Samantha Briggs. Check it out below:

The difficulty in snatching came not from the load or the squat under the bar. It came from the necessity of pulling with the weight more forward than the technique Toomey is accustomed to. This was to ensure the bar was at a safe distance from her belly. With the weight further forward, getting under the barbell is more challenging, and Toomey isn’t in a condition to fight to save a rep.

Not having snatched since the 2022 CrossFit Games, getting any rep was more than Toomey expected. When asked if the squat position under the barbell was a limiting factor, Toomey said it was actually a strength. As she has gotten further along in her pregnancy, she says her hips have widened, making the deep squat position quite comfortable.

The top 10 percent of the worldwide field at the conclusion of the CrossFit Open qualifies for the virtual Quarterfinals scheduled to begin March 16, 2023.
