Let the “Madness” Begin! Mayhem Madness Opens Up Registration and Releases Workouts for Qualifier

June 18, 2020 by

On Wednesday, registration for the Mayhem Madness online qualifier went live and the five workouts that will test potential qualifiers for the exclusive team competition were also released. The qualifier will determine seeding for teams that have already gained invitations through Sanctionals and also to fill out the 12-team field.

The details: The qualifier started on Wednesday and concludes on Monday, June 22 at midnight CST. All scores must be submitted online or through the Throwdowns app.

  • There are two divisions, one for RX athletes and one for scaled athletes.
  • Teams in each division are composed of two males and two females.
  • Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishing teams in the RX division. First place will receive $3,000, second will receive $2,000, and third will get $1,000. The Mayhem Freedom and Independence teams are ineligible to receive prize money.
  • The competition will include the nine teams previously qualified for the Games through Sanctionals as well as three new teams that will earn their spot through the online qualifier.
  • The qualifier features five work outs done individually with team scores resulting from a combination of those individual scores.
  • There are scaled versions of the workouts for that division.
  • Top teams from the scaled divisions will be eligible for prizes from sponsors of the Mayhem Madness and possible special invitations to compete on the floor with the elites.
  • The top three new teams from the qualifier will receive an invite, and all nine previously invited teams will also participate in the qualifier in order to seed all 12 competing teams for the purposes of setting up an “event draft” to help determine the programming for the live event on August 2-9 in Cookeville, Tennessee.
  • If a pre-qualified team can’t compete for any reason, a backfill will come through the sanctionals backfill process for the next team that has completed the online qualifier.
  • The organizers have announced that there will be a limited number of spectator, VIP-only tickets. Prices and availability are to be determined.
  • However early access to tickets will be granted to participants from the online qualifier.
  • There will also be a live broadcast every evening of the competition. Details will be announced on Rich Froning’s and the Mayhem Classic’s Instagram pages.

The workouts: Froning and his team have selected five grueling workouts that require basic gym equipment including rowers, barbells, dumbbells, plates, pull-up bars and boxes.

  • Event 1: The equipment needed for the opening event is a Concept 2 rower and an “engine”. Individuals will follow a rep scheme of 27-21-15-9 calorie rows and lateral burpees over the rower.
  • Event 2: The second event is a nasty take on “Fran”. It follows the traditional 21-15-9 scheme but with heavy thrusters (115lbs for the men/80lbs for the women) and chest-to-bar pull-ups.
  • Event 3: Is essentially a few rounds of heavy “Grace” followed by a five-minute AMRAP. For the first five minutes, each athlete will have to complete 30 clean and jerks at 135 pounds for the men and 95 for the women. At the 5:00 minute mark, they will once again do 30 clean and jerks but this time at 185 lbs/125 lbs. Finally, at the 10:00 minute mark, each athlete will have five minutes to complete as many clean and jerks at 225 lbs for the men and 155 lbs for the women.
  • Event 4: Will test athletes shoulders in a couplet that features a grand total of 400 feet of handstand walks and 36 bar muscle-ups for time.
  • Event 5: Is a brutal 20 minute AMRAP that features 150 double unders, 50 alternating box step-ups (with a 50/35 lb dumbbell) onto a 20-inch box, 50 toes-to-bars and 50 step-back lunges with a dumbbell (50/35 lbs).
  • The scaled versions of the workouts are available on the Throwdowns website or app.
