How To Watch The 2021 CrossFit Open Workout 21.3 Announcement

March 19, 2021 by Phil Blechman

Both workouts 21.1 and 21.2 for the 2021 CrossFit Open have been announced. Both were revealed by the Director of the CrossFit Games, Dave Castro, on the CrossFit Games YouTube channel on March 11 and 19, 2021, respectively, at 8 p.m. EST. Although that has been the norm, CrossFit HQ is switching things up for the announcement for workout 21.3, which is currently scheduled for March 25, 2021.

Rather than hold the announcement in the evening for the east coast of the United States, CrossFit HQ has shifted 21.3’s announcement time to 3 p.m EST on the CrossFit Games YouTube Channel. This change is to better accommodate the international community, particularly the Open competitors in Europe. They will be able to watch 21.3’s announcement at a more reasonable hour. For reference, if someone were to have watched the 21.1 and 21.2 announcements live in the UK, it would have been at 12 a.m. GMT.

Following the unveiling of this schedule change, Castro said:

“We’re acknowledging the worldwide community that is CrossFit. We might get great feedback from [the schedule change]…we might decide from now on [to announce] early. We always…like to test new things, and I’m thrilled by it.”

The workout 21.3 announcement will feature the three Panchik brothers — Scott, Saxon, and Spencer. They will square off against each other as the first three athletes to perform 21.3. Altogether, they have eleven CrossFit Games appearances (Scott with eight and Saxon with three) and match the workout title — “Sibling Rivalry” — quite well.

Workout 21.1 Recap

The results for workout 21.1 have been verified, and Johanna Julia Juliusdottir of Iceland and Jonne Koski of Finland sit atop the women’s and men’s leaderboards, respectively. Here were their times for 21.1:

  • Johanna Julia Juliusdottir — 11:02
  • Jonne Koski — 11:08

During the 21.1 announcement, 2020 CrossFit Games bronze medalist Kari Pearce went head-to-head with Kristi Eramo O’Connell. Pearce bested Eramo O’Connell with an official time of 13:05. Eramo O’Connell did not finish the workout within the time cap during the announcement but redid the workout to score an official time of 13:47.

Workout 21.2 Recap

The head-to-head battle for workout 21.2 with all its dumbbell snatches and burpee box jump-overs was a clash between the two men who stood alongside five-time Fittest Man on Earth® Mat Fraser on the podium at the 2020 Games — runner-up Samuel Kwant and bronze medalist Justin Medeiros. Fraser has since announced his retirement from competitive CrossFit, meaning Kwant versus Medeiros is a matchup of the two highest-ranking active CrossFitters coming into the 2021 Open. Here are their scores for 21.2:

  • Justin Medeiros — 10:01
  • Samuel Kwant — 11:56

Note: CrossFit HQ has not yet verified scores for 21.2.

Even More Open

We will see how the CrossFit community worldwide feels about HQ’s decision to change workout 21.3’s announcement time. If a large majority is positive, it could become the standard moving forward, as Castro suggested.
