“Just go faster if you’re fitter:” Vellner’s Take On Repeating A 3-year-old Open Workout.
Sometimes the simplest answers are the correct ones. That’s exactly how Pat Vellner felt about 19.2 being a repeat of 16.2, recommending athletes to “just go faster if you’re fitter.”
“I really liked that workout last time. One of my favorite open workouts ever actually,” says Vellner about 19.2/16.2.
To one of the fittest people on the planet, 19.2 is a “good workout for me. [Cleans] are basically just a really fast deadlift that you catch on your shoulders. No problem.”
So how does someone gameplan around strengths like that?
“Do the same thing as last time except just be stronger for the last two bars.”
And it really is that simple. Vellner shared with me his time for 19.2, which we will not be publishing right now, and clearly three years of training has paid off.
“Well my max clean in 2016 was 335. Now it’s 375. That makes a large difference. [It was] easy.”
