“Nowhere to Hide,” Toomey and Fraser Win Corn Sack Sprint

October 23, 2020 by Andrew Gutman

Mathew Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey have now added to their career total event wins, leading the weekend with 200 points apiece at the end of two events. Event two, the Corn Sack Sprint, was anything but pretty, and that’s because the event is designed to be a raw test of endurance, taxing the legs on unsteady terrain.

Here’s how the competitors performed in event two, the Corn Sack Sprint:

Corn Sack Sprint Men’s Results:

  1. Mathew Fraser, 2:51
  2. Samuel Kwant, 3:07
  3. Noah Ohlsen, 3:18
  4. Jeffrey Adler, 3:20
  5. Justin Medeiros, 3:21

Corn Sack Sprint Women’s Results:

  1. Tia-Clair Toomey, 3:05
  2. Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir, 3:13
  3. Haley Adams, 3:24
  4. Kari Pearce, 3:28
  5. Brooke Wells, 3:35

Corn Sack Sprint Highlights

Every point matters this weekend. With just five men and five women competing, the leaderboard has the potential to shift rapidly if an athlete can string together a few event wins.

In the men’s division, Samuel Kwant improved on his third-place finish in event one (2007 Reload), notching a second-place finish in the sprint and pushing him to number two overall.

While Medeiros, the only rookie in the finals this year, had an impressive second-place finish in event one, he was overtaken by Jeffrey Adler right at the finish line of the Corn Sack Sprint. Adler made a serious push while Medeiros seemed to walk across the finish line more casually. He lost to Adler by less than one second, and, as a result, cost himself 20 points. Medeiros will have to hope that his mistake won’t cost him as the Games continue.

In the women’s event, Katrin Davíðsdóttir proved what we already know — that she has serious grit and endurance. Davíðsdóttir finished eight seconds behind Toomey. An event win would have given her great momentum, but Davidsdottir is no stranger to mounting comebacks. She is now in third place overall, trailing runner-up Haley Adams by 20 points.

More To Come This Weekend

The first two events of the 2020 CrossFit Games Finals nostalgically reached back to some of the first events at The Rance. After a grueling first event called “2007 Reload,” the athletes were treated to a classic hill sprint while carrying corn sacks on their backs — 50 pounds for the men and 30 pounds for the women.

The first day of the competition has only just begun. With three events remaining in the day, it will be interesting to see how these elite athletes hold up.
