Three Things to Pay Attention to on Day 3 at Wodapalooza
The final day of competition at Wodapalooza kicks off in just a few hours. Only one male, female and team will receive invites to the 2019 CrossFit Games, but here are a few things to keep on your radar screen as the action unfolds.
It’s going to be tough to catch the individual leaders
Tia-Clair Toomey: +40 points over second
Patrick Vellner: +56 points over second
The point spread has only continued to grow as the competition unfolds.
Get this, there are most likely only two scored events tomorrow and athletes who place seventh receive 72 out of 100 available points. Vellner’s worst finish is 7th so he’d have to finish seventh in the next two events and Travis Mayer win both events to make up the difference. In that scenario, it would essentially be a tie.
For Tia, even though the point spread is much closer, it appears less likely. She’s never finished lower than 2nd in an event and the heavy snatch coming up on Event 6 plays to Tia’s strength. Holte, in second place, will likely struggle a bit with the heaviest snatch.
Who’s fighting for second through fifth?
Unlike Regionals, second through fifth don’t guarantee you an invite to the CrossFit Games, but they might. With the way CrossFit is backfilling positions, it’s very possible athletes from second place on down could receive an invitation.
Additionally, second and third will receive automatic invites to compete at Fittest in Cape Town, and second through fifth will receive invitations to compete at Brazil CrossFit Championship.

- Patrick Vellner (448)
- Travis Mayer (392)

- Colleen Fotsch (362)
- Dani Speegle (346)
Mayhem is Probably Out
Turns out some of these super teams comprised of elite individual athletes are pretty super after all. That plus some complications from Mayhem Freedom have left them 106 points out of first place. You never want to count Rich Froning out of the fight but the way the points are structured in the team competition, it’s hard to envision a scenario where they can make up that ground.
It seems fans will be seeing Mayhem at another Sanctional in the near future. The most obvious choice is the Mid Atlantic CrossFit Challenge which takes place April 12 – 14, 2019.
