Yesterday, we wrote about USA Weightlifting’s athletes CJ Cummings and Caitlin Hogan putting on stellar performances at the 2018 Senior Pan American Weightlifting Championships. Without giving too many spoilers we’ll just say multiple medals were won and some records were broken. If you missed that article check it out here!
The 2018 Senior Pan American Weightlifting Championships kicked off May 12th and extends through the 18th. If you’re just now joining us and want to watch the live stream, then we suggest checking out this article.
If you’re going to tune in, today is one of the best days to do so. Five members of USA Weightlifting’s team will be taking the platform all throughout the day. To kick off the day, Jordan Cantrell and Harrison Maurus start at 10 A.M., Nathron Damron competes at 12:30 PM, Jenny Arthur at 3:00 PM, and Wes Kitts at 5:30 PM, all times in EST.
Yesterday, 69kg weightlifter Mattie Rogers was one of two athletes to compete for USA Weightlifting, and she put on a show. Rogers ended up going 3/6 on the day and took home silver in the snatch, clean & jerk, and total. Not a bad day for only making half of your attempts.
Rogers opened her snatch attempts with 99kg, but unfortunately got called for a press out. On her second attempt she hit 99kg with ease, then called for 103kg on her third (missed).
For clean & jerks, Rogers opened with an easy 126kg, hit 130kg for a second, but missed a hard fought 136kg third. The 99kg snatch and 136kg clean & jerk were enough to earn her a 229kg total, and again, silver medals across the board.
This year’s Senior Pan American Championships are a big deal because with a top three finish, USA Weightlifting would be awarded with the ability to compete with a full team at the 2019 Pan Am Games. Hopefully USA Weightlifting can keep the momentum going through the day and into Friday the 18th.
