2023 TYR Wodapalooza Individual Event 1 Results — Emma Cary and Ricky Garard Open the Competition With Wins

The 2023 TYR Wodapalooza (WZA) kicked off from Miami, FL. on January 12. The four-day competition features some of the best CrossFit athletes squaring off in both the Individual and Teams divisions. There’s a total of $500,000 in prize money up for grabs, and below, you can check out who started things off strong during the first event.

Event 1 Results — “Rings & Squats”

When this workout was first announced at the beginning of January, WZA founder Guido Trinidad said the idea had been in the hopper for six years. The result turned out to be a thrilling opening workout with some memorable performances. Here’s who came out on top:

Women’s Event Highlights

It’s been 13 months since Emma Cary last appeared on the competition floor. The 18-year-old suffered a back injury during the Dubai CrossFit Championship back in December 2021, and then reaggravated during the Quarterfinals, forcing her to sit out ever since.

The Cary that was on display during the opening event of TYR Wodapalooza was the version that CrossFit fans saw during the 2021 CrossFit Games season as she won the opening event at the 2023 WZA with a time of 9:10 in the second heat. Italy’s Elisa Fuliano won the third and final heat with a time of 9:11.28 to place second overall, just a hair behind Cary’s total. Games veteran Paige Semenza placed third with a time of 9:23.95 to round out the top three.

Men’s Event Highlights

In a star-studded men’s field, it was the biggest names that shined the brightest as the final heat had the ebbs and flows of a heavyweight prize fight. CrossFit Games podium finishers Ricky Garard and Patrick Vellner went rep-for-rep right from the start, with the Aussie holding a slight lead heading into the final movement of the workout: the overhead squat.

Garard did the nine reps unbroken, while Vellner suffered costly no-reps. Garard won with a time of 8:41.89, and fan-favorite Nick Mathew slid into the second spot with a time of 9:56.51. Vellner finished third with a time of 10:15.50.
