2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games Team Division Results — CrossFit Mayhem Freedom on Top Once Again

August 7, 2022 by Alex Polish, NASM-CNC, ACE-CPT, SITA-SIFS

The 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games are a wrap, with Tia-Clair Toomey the newly-minted six-time Fittest Woman on Earth® and Justin Medeiros having successfully defended his 2021 title. The Adaptive and Age Group divisions crowned their Fittest on Saturday, Aug. 6, with Casey Acree of Men’s Upper Extremity sweeping every one of eight events. On the Teams side, Sunday served as the final day of competition — and it was an exciting one.

CrossFit Mayhem Freedom’s victory marked Rich Froning’s 10th time standing atop a podium at the Games. Under the leadership of Froning, CrossFit Mayhem Freedom’s dominant performance wasn’t a big surprise. Still, CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue came to play, taking the leader jersey from Mayhem Freedom for the first time in years.

While Oslo Navy Blue couldn’t fend off Mayhem Freedom’s onslaught of seven consecutive event wins, they were able to hold firmly to second place. CrossFit Invictus edged out Annie Thorisdottir’s CrossFit Reykjavík for the final podium spot.

Here are the Team winners along with the final 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games Team leaderboard.

2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games Team Winners

  1. CrossFit Mayhem Freedom (1,052 points)
  2. CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue (987 points)
  3. CrossFit Invictus (951 points)
  4. CrossFit Reykjavík (937 points)
  5. CrossFit Mayhem Independence (804 points)
  6. CrossFit Selwyn (739 points)
  7. CrossFit Omnia Black (685 points)
  8. CrossFit Move Fast Lift Heavy (656 points)
  9. CrossFit Pro1 Montreal (640 points)
  10. 8th Day CrossFit Black (612 points)

2022 CrossFit Games Team Division Day One

Day One of competition was full obstacles — and not always the programmed kind. Event One for the Individuals, Bike to Work, seemed to go off without a hitch for the women’s side. The men’s Individual division, though, had more than a little confusion where several athletes seemed to miss a lap in their biking.

While the Teams division — also kicking off with a biking event called Biker Bob — hoped to avoid similar mishaps, there was no such luck in the cards. The rain and lightning over the skies in Madison caused a two-hour delay between heats one and two of Team Event One.

2022 CrossFit Games Team Division Day Two

Events Two and Three were originally slated to take place on Day One, but were shifted around due to the weather. Originally a rest day for Teams, Day Two saw the Teams battling through Events Two and Three back-to-back in the afternoon Madison sun. The two events — Strong and Fast, respectively — followed each other. Athletes took turns establishing max jerks and front squats in Strong, then participated in team runs during Fast.

Thanks to strong performances on both opening days of the Games, CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue wrested control of the leaderboard from CrossFit Mayhem Freedom to cap off Day Two. After a disappointing start on Day One, CrossFit Reykjavík climbed back up to fourth place after Strong and Fast. While CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue surprised many  fans with wins in the first two of three events, they would not lose much momentum throughout the weekend.

2022 CrossFit Games Team Division Day Three

But CrossFit Mayhem Freedom fought back to kick off Day Three on Friday, Aug. 5. They dominated Events Five and Six, the Muscle Pig and the Handstand Machine, to burst their way into first place. This day would mark the start of their surge that would define the rest of the weekend.

2022 CrossFit Games Team Division Day Four

On Saturday — the penultimate day of competition — CrossFit Reykjavík continued their battle back from a disastrous and unexpected 30th-place finish on Pegs & P-Bars early on in competition. Two-time Fittest Woman on Earth® Annie Thorisdottir’s team earned second place in Rinse ‘N’ Repeat and Dumbbell Highball, continuing their climb toward the podium.

On Saturday, CrossFit Yas and KT CrossFit withdrew from competition.

After the last event on Saturday, fourteen teams were cut from the competition, with only the top 20 teams advancing to Sunday — the final day of the 2022 Games.

2022 CrossFit Games Team Division Day Five

With only one event to go, CrossFit Reykjavík was still seeking out that podium spot, but it looked like CrossFit Invictus would have to seriously falter in the final event for that to happen. According to the commentators, if CrossFit Reykjavík had finished 10th early on when they came in a surprising 30th, they would have rolled into Sunday in second place.
