Records are made to be broken, and that’s the mindset 2016 USA Weightlifting (USAW) National Champion Caitlin Hogan is training with on a daily basis. This past weekend, in preparation for the first leg of the American Open Series that will be held in Reno, Nevada, on March 11th, Hogan did just that.
Training close to her competition bodyweight category of 53KG, Hogan snatched 86KG (189lb) and clean & jerked 109KG (240lb), which totals 195KG (429lb). The current American Record total for the 53KG category is 193KG (425lb), which was set by Team USA’s Melanie Roach at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Sean Waxman, Hogan’s coach, wrote on Instagram that her lifts are “not perfect yet. There’s a lot of work to do. Our priority in Reno is a 186kg total which will secure her spot on the Pan Am Team.”
Check out the top lifts from Hogan’s training total below:
If she is successful in earning a spot onto Team USA for the July’s Pan-American Championships, Hogan has a chance to leave her mark on the 53KG record books.
Hogan’s 86KG snatch unofficially ties the current record in the weight class, which was set in May of 2016 at the Olympic Trials in Salt Lake City by Cortney Batchelor. Her clean & jerk is within 5KG (11lbs) of the current American record, which is also held by Roach. Roach’s clean & jerk record in the 53KG category is the oldest Senior American Record on the books today; it was set in April of 1998.
In November, Hogan swept three silver medals at the 2016 World University Championships in Mexico. In that competition she clean & jerked 107KG, which represented a double bodyweight lift, a feat accomplished by only a handful of women in American weightlifting.
