Weightlifting Coach John Coffee Suffers Stroke, Improving and Recovering in Hospital

Last Saturday, American weightlifting coach John Coffee suffered a stroke. The founder and owner of Coffee’s Gym in Marietta, Georgia, Coffee is currently recovering in the hospital. Check out the posts below from Coffee’s colleagues and athletes Kelly Rexroad Williams and Edward Baker.

From Williams:

And Baker:

Coffee is a well-known figure in American weightlifting and has been lifting and coaching for over half a century. His athletes include Olympians, a World Champion, and dozens of Pan American and World team members representing the USA.

This 2010 profile from Patch.com gives a little more insight into the history of Coffee and Coffee’s Gym. Coffee’s Gym has been open in Marietta — at various locations — since 1980, well before many of his current athletes were born.

If you’ve never seen Coffee coach (or had the pleasure of being coached by him), check out the video below, where he puts a weightlifting beginner through the paces in learning how to snatch.

We’re wishing John Coffee a speedy recovery and quick return to the gym.
