Three More Sanctionals Tap the Open as Their Qualifier

In an announcement posted to Instagram early this morning, three more European Sanctionals have decided to use the 2019-2020 CrossFit Open as their qualifier, bringing the total to six Sanctionals.

  • Newly added: Reykjavik CrossFit Championship, CrossFit Strength in Depth, and CrossFit French Throwdown.
  • The other three: Norwegian CrossFit Championship, Down Under CrossFit Championship, and Brazil CrossFit Championship.
  • Here’s the full 2019-2020 Sanctionals season calendar.

The backdrop: The decision whether to join the International Online Qualifier or some other means was discussed at a Sanctionals-confab during the French Throwdown last month, where nearly all European Sanctionals organizers attended.

  • Filthy150 in Dublin is using the International Online Qualifier.
  • Madrid CrossFit Championship is expected to join that coalition.
  • CrossFit Italian Showdown has their own unique, 1500 athlete in-person qualification system.
  • CrossFit German Throwdown is still TBD.

The big picture: This season, the Down Under CrossFit Championship was the only event out of fifteen to us the Open as a qualifier. With two weeks left until the Games, we now have six of the 28 — more than 20% — confirmed events for the 2020 Games season using the worldwide open. The announcement also came with all four events included together, which is another move towards a more unified front from Sanctionals working together to iron out best practices amongst themselves.

Alyssa Ritchey on Changes in a Body — Yesterday, Alyssa Ritchey posted a message about body positivity on her Instagram.

— “Every little part of me is perfect, perfectly flawed or perfectly beautiful to those who look and judge. But to me I am perfect… Purely, beautifully, I will be a woman of character first, my body will come and go with the different phases in my life. Right now I am a muscular woman with thick legs, a poppin booty, veins that look like the upside down world, a ripped back, and biceps that can be seen from miles.

— “I am a different type of body, one that you might not like but I don’t care. I don’t do it to impress or for you to obsess over. But I do it for me and my sport. I do it because I love how strong I feel. I’ll take the stares and I’ll take the comments because this little 4 foot 11 inch body was built on pure grit and the desire to make a dream come true.

— “Remember your body can do more than just look pretty. It can be a mom, a dad, an athlete, an Olympian, a role model, a sister or brother, a volunteer, a mentor, a hand to help someone up when they have fallen, a voice to be heard, and so much more. Be more.”

“RxMindset Copies Third Barbell Physio Program,” by Justin LoFranco, Morning Chalk Up

Over the weekend, RxMindset posted another The Barbell Physio program — Strict Muscle-Up Program — reselling it without permission. Morning Chalk Up also confirmed that Catalyst Athletics programs and photographers’ images have also been used without permission.

Despite the investigation that brought this story to light, it appears RxMindset has not been deterred.

Though the program was removed Monday after Morning Chalk Up contacted Mr. Hernandez again about the program, we reviewed and confirmed that RxMindset’s Strict Muscle-Up Program matches The Barbell Physio’s. The $20 downloadable PDF also links directly to co-creator’s Dr. Zach Long and Pamela Gagnon’s YouTube video instructions.

“How he can own a CrossFit Affiliate and steal from his own community is just disgusting and outrageous,” said Pamela Gagnon, co-creator of The Barbell Physio’s training programs.

Mr. Hernandez, who also coaches at Pacifico CrossFit, said he was unaware the programs belonged to another company.

“I purchased the programs from a 3rd party for resale recently. Had no idea they were someone else’s,” Mr. Hernandez said in an email. “I have and had no intention on stealing.”

The third party Mr. Hernandez referenced is called The_wod_rxd.

“They seem to have disappeared from social media,” Mr. Hernandez told us.

An Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Google search could find no results or indication this page or company ever existed. This story was postponed more than two days to give Mr. Hernandez an opportunity to produce corroborating receipts which he said he was unable to do or provide any kind of email confirmation.

This also doesn’t explain why The Barbell Physio and Catalyst Athletics were blocked by RxMindset’s Instagram if the programs were purchased from a third party source.
