International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) sent out a press release earlier this week sharing a big announcement by the IWF Masters, USA Weightlifting, and USA Masters Weightlifting:
“The 2020 IWF World Masters Championship will be held in Orlando, Florida, USA from August 28th to September 5th.”
The IWF World Masters Championship was originally to be held in Obrigheim, Germany. Due to undisclosed reasons, Germany is no longer able to host the event. The United States was the runner-up to Germany at the conclusion of the bidding process held in Barcelona, Spain in 2018 and was invited to host the 2020 IWF World Masters Championship.
The IWF World Masters Championship is an international competition for athletes at or over the age of 35. Along with weight class, athletes will compete in divisions by age of 5 year increments from 35 years of age to over 80 years of age.
The 2019 IWF World Masters Championship was held in Montreal, Canada where Marcel Perron, 86, of Canada and Kristi Brewer, 38, of the United States were ranked number one overall in the men’s and women’s categories respectively, according to the Sinclair-Meltzer-Faber (SMF) coefficients. The SMF formula is used to rank athletes results regardless of weight class or age.
