Toomey-Orr notably broke Mat Fraser’s all-time Games event win record (previously 29) by logging her 30th win during Event 11. The final day of the Games will take place on Sunday, August 1, 2021. There are also just 20 men and 20 women remaining since athletes were cut at the end of Day Two and then again after Event 10.

Event 10 Results

The first event of Day Three was an absolute lung-buster. Athletes taxed their core muscles big time with 90 total toes-to-bar reps, with two 1.5-mile runs sandwiched between.

“The Engine” Sam Briggs, Kristin Holte, Emily Rolfe, Haley Adams, and Kristi Eramo O’Connell all jumped out in front, trading places for two rounds. O’Connell and Rolfe were trading figurative blows by round four as they sustained an even and steady pace. Rolfe finished her final toes-to-bar rep and sprinted toward the finish line. It was a dramatic finish as Eramo O’Connell made up some serious ground, though it wasn’t enough, and she finished a close second behind Rolfe. Adams and Briggs fought for third, with the American coming out on top. Overall leader for the women, Toomey-Orr, came in fifth, but still maintained a titanic lead after 11 events.

No man in the overall top five finished in the top five of Event 10. Noah Ohlsen got in front early, but his lead was short-lived. Chandler Smith, Men’s leader Justin Medeiros, Jason Smith, and Jay Crouch stayed in a pack. Brown was in a comfortable lead, but then slowed down during the second round of toes-to-bar reps. Lazar Đukić managed to grab the lead and sustain it for first place. Brown finished four seconds later. Scott Panchik, who aggravated his knee during Event One, suffered during the run and finished in 26th place overall.

Event 11 Results

Ah, the pegboard. This old-school gym class torture device made its Games debut in 2015 and returned this year to punish the shoulders of the remaining 60 athletes. The competitors had 11 minutes to accumulate as many reps as possible of a single pegboard climb, seven overhead squats, and five heavy double-unders.

Toomey-Orr, who is known for her strength and powerful engine, managed 231 total reps, which was good enough for first. With her 30th Games win, Toomey-Orr claimed the all-time Games event record, besting Mat Fraser’s previous record of 29 wins. Danielle Brandon was hot on Toomey’s tail, however, and finished just six reps behind her. Multiple athletes had shattered the previous record of six pegboard reps by the time the event was over.  After 11 minutes, Toomey-Orr had the most reps, with Danielle Brandon behind her and Baylee Rayl in third. Mallory O’Brien, who became the youngest ever CrossFit Games event winner during Event Four, got fourth place.

Cole Sager tore through his reps, to the point where he lapped the competition at the 7:30 mark. In heat two, Medeiros seemed to struggle. He got a no rep in the overhead squat and then another during his double-unders. Björgvin Karl Gudmundsson extended his lead, but then at the 8:30 mark was caught by Lazar Đukić. Still, Sager out of heat one was too dominant, and his 276 reps remained the most of the men.

Individual Event 11 — Top Five Men

  1. Cole Sager — 276 reps
  2. Lazar Đukić — 269 reps
  3. Björgvin Karl Gudmundsson — 261 reps

11-minute AMRAP:

  • 1 pegboard ascent
  • 7 single-arm dumbbell overhead squats, 50 pounds for women | 70 pounds for men
  • 5 heavy double-unders

Event 12 Results

Both the men and the women — who competed in two separate heats — rotated through a series of ascending snatches. Athletes who couldn’t lift the weight were cut from the next round. If any of the athletes failed an attempt, they competed in the tie-breaker consisting of three snatches and a short sprint to the finish line.

All 20 women managed the first 160-pound snatch, and then the cuts began. By the sixth round (190 pounds), only 10 athletes remained. Laura Horvath and Toomey-Orr passed, and then Brooke Wells took the podium. As Wells lifted the weight overhead, her right arm bent, and she collapsed in pain. CrossFit announced later that she medically withdrew from the competition, though the specifics of her injury were not revealed.

Toomey-Orr and Thorisdotter both snatched 200 pounds, but both failed to lift 205 pounds. Thorisdottir missed a rep during the tie-breaker, which let Toomey get out in front (though it was still a close finish).

Bayden Brown, Henrik Haapalainen, and Cole Sager were the first two men to fail the opening weight of 260 pounds. Fourteen men made it to 280 pounds. Jeffrey Adler, Mayer, and Gudmundsson failed the attempts and engaged in a tie-breaker — it went Mayer, Adler, Gudmundsson.

After a couple more rounds, the entire event came down to Royce Dunne and Guilherme Malheiros (Patrick Vellner was the third man out). The two both hit 300 pounds, and then the weight was moved up to 305 pounds. Dunne missed his first attempt, couldn’t hit his second, and went for a third but still came up short. It was all on Malheiros, and he continued his streak of flawless lifts. Malheiros goes a perfect nine-for-nine on attempts to claim his third event win of the 2021 Games.

Individual Event 12 — Top Five Men

  1. Guilherme Malheiros
  2. Royce Dunne
  3. Patrick Vellner

Event 12

Establish a max one-rep snatch.

*Athletes eliminated in the same round competed in a tiebreaker of three snatches for speed and crossing a finish line. Winners scored higher ranks — Men: 225 pounds | Women: 145 pounds

The Games Continue

The remaining 20 athletes in each division have only the final day of the competition left to make moves on the leaderboard. There are three events left until a new champion is crowned. Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr stands firmly atop the overall leaderboard for the Women’s Division and is en route to a record-tying fifth CrossFit Games title — Mat Fraser is the only athlete with that many Individual Games championships. The three podium spots for the men’s division are still in flux going into the final day, but Justin Medeiros has the lead.
