Annie Thorisdottir and Katrin Davidsdottir Release “Effective, Safe, and Transparent Sunscreen”
CrossFit Games veterans Annie Thorisdottir and Katrin Davidsdottir used to complain to each other about not being able to find a quality sunscreen that worked for their skin.
- “I went to see a skin doctor in Iceland to see what would be best for my skin, and she said, ‘Of course, you are already using sunscreen on your face every day.’ And I had to admit I did not,” Thorisdottir, a two-time CrossFit Games champion, said.
Part of the reason Thorisdottir avoided wearing sunscreen was simply because she didn’t think she needed to. Another reason was that it would burn her eyes if she began to sweat, which is even more uncomfortable when you spend so much time competing outdoors.
- As a result, she’d often risk the chance of getting sunburn rather than feeling that stinging in her eyes.

Three years ago, she and Davidsdottir decided to take matters into their own hands by creating a new sunscreen line through their company, Dottir. The product finally launched in August 2024 under the brand Dottir Skin.
The sunscreen sold out in Iceland within 45 minutes of the launch but has already been restocked.
The Details
Thorisdottir and Davidsdottir partnered with chemical engineer Helga Sigrun, a woman whose university thesis was focused on sunscreen.
- Together, they have managed to create what Thorisdottir calls “an effective, safe and transparent sunscreen.”
During the development process, Thorisdottir and Davidsdottir tried the different prototypes on their faces before entering a sauna to see if they would drip and sting.
Thorisdottir admitted the first interaction was a miss.
- “We also trained with them on to see if they were put to our standards outside the lab, and we finally discovered the perfect formula,” she said.

The result: A 100 percent mineral sunscreen that protects against sunburn while remaining comfortable and non-irritating, Thorisdottir explained.
- Further, it is broad-spectrum, SPF 50-plus, with high UVA protection. It’s also water-resistant and fragrance-free and fulfills all European testing and regulation standards.
Note: The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends using sunscreens that are at least SPF 30.
They’re currently shipping to most of Europe and Canada.
The Big Picture
Right now, sunscreen is Dottir Skin’s flagship product. However, this is just the start of their skincare journey.
The Games veterans are also working on a natural after-sun product that contains protein-cleaving digestive enzymes from Icelandic cod fish and hyaluronic acid.
- “It works magic on burnt, sensitive skin as it can battle irritation in addition to many other benefits like increased hydration and skin cell rejuvenation,” Thorisdottir said.
In the meantime, Davidsdottir continues to recover from a back injury that forced her to drop out of the 2024 CrossFit season. Thorisdottir, who gave birth to her second child just four months ago, is already training and intends to compete at the Rogue Invitational in November in Aberdeen, Scotland.
