Alright, now that the dust has settled from a huge weekend in powerlifting, we can take a step back and recognize another monstrous powerlifting feat that hasn’t received nearly enough attention. While the Boss of Bosses V was wrapping up in Mountain View, California, there was another big meet going down in Texas, and that was the USPA/IPL hosted The Tribute.
Similar to the Boss of Bosses V, The Tribute meet included a stacked roster of big named athletes such as Kevin Oak, Chakera Holcomb, John Haack, Ben Pollack, and of course, Marianna Gasparyan, who’s also the focal point of this article.
Gasparyan is a legend in the sport of powerlifting, and over the weekend proved that point once more breaking two all-time world records, along with shattering Stefi Cohen’s recently set highest Wilks Score in sleeves. Per OpenPowerlifting.org, Gasparyan now owns both the highest all-time Wilks Score in both raw (sleeves) and in raw (+wraps).
Weighing in at 59.4kg/130.9 lbs, Gasparyan competed in the women’s 60kg/132 lb weight class. To kick off her record breaking performance, Gasparyan finished her squat attempts with a huge 220kg/485 lbs. This lift absolutely obliterated her previously owned 60kg/132 lb all-time world record of 204kg/451 lbs.
A video of her record-breaking performance is embedded below and also available here if you’re having trouble seeing it on your mobile device!
Moving onto the bench press, Gasparyan finished her attempts with a clean 130kg/285 lb press. Then on the deadlift, she hit a solid 215kg/473 lbs. Gasparyan’s final successful deadlift was huge because it not only awarded her the all-time world record total with 565kg/1,245 lbs, but it also pushed her Wilks Score to 634.8, aka the highest ever recorded in sleeves.
In part of Gasparyan’s Instagram post recapping the meet she writes (which is roughly translated through the Instagram app),
“Outcome of the day: I made the program minimum of what was planned. And yet I’m very happy with my performance today.”
Consider this, Gasparyan met her programmed minimum for the meet, and with it broke two all-time world records and hit the highest ever Wilks Score in sleeves — that’s absolutely incredible.
