Meredith Alwine Sweeps Gold at Weightlifting World Cup!

She also hit a competition PR snatch to finish a phenomenal weekend in Rome!

Meredith Alwine is no stranger to the podium of high level competitions. This time last year she was just 2kg (4.4lb) shy of matching first place at the Pan American Trials during the USA Weightlifting (USAW) National Junior Championships. But gold did not elude Alwine for very long.

She represented the United States competing in the -71kg weight class at the 2020 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Weightlifting World Cup in Rome, Italy and won gold for the snatch, clean & jerk, and total. To top off an already exceptional performance, Alwine also managed to secure a new competition personal record snatch of 103kg (227lb).

After going three for three in the snatch, what makes this gold winning competition PR all the more impressive is Alwine actually missed her final two warm-up snatches of 94kg (207lb). Safe to say, Alwine regained her champion mentality to post a huge total. Here are her full results:

  • Snatch – 103kg (227lb) – Gold (competition PR)
  • Clean & Jerk – 134kg (295lb) – Gold
  • Total – 237kg (522.5lb) – Gold

Despite missing her first clean & jerk attempt of 131kg (289lb), Alwine cleared it easily on her second attempt before calling for 134kg (295lb) on the bar. Her third attempt looked effortless. Check it out here from 1K’s Instagram page:
