Pro Bodybuilder and Coach John Meadows Suffers Heart Attack

Meadows is also known as “The Mountain Dog”

IFBB Pro League bodybuilder and renowned nutritionist/coach John Meadows is in an Ohio hospital after suffering a heart attack on May 11. His wife, Mary, posted the news on his Facebook page the evening that he was admitted.

“This is Mary. John has suffered a heart attack today. His blood vessels appear to be fine. Potentially a clotting disorder with his blood. He is in the hospital now. Please keep him in your prayers. Thank you.”

Meadows, 48, is best-known in the bodybuilding industry as a coach, nutritionist, and for his successful YouTube channel where he features many of his favorite workouts and performs exercise demonstrations. He’s also the owner of the supplement brand, Granite Supplements.

Meadows’ family are feeling positive that he will recover but no official medical update had been shared as of this writing. This latest medical issue is not Meadows’ first. In 2005, he had to deal with a rare colon disease that nearly cost him his life. He had his entire colon removed but was able to resume his training and pursuit of achieving professional status. He finally achieved that milestone by winning the NPC Team Universe in 2015.

He followed up that victory by competing in his first three pro shows in the 212 pound division within the next few weeks. His highest placing was 3rd at the Tampa Pro. He came up just shy of qualifying for the Olympia 212 contest that season.

He competed four more times since that year, most notably at the Arnold Classic 212 where he placed 9th. His last contest to date was actually in the Open division. He placed 14th in the 2017 Muscle Mayhem Pro.

His work in the industry as a coach and contributor is what makes him popular among fans. Among the athletes he has worked with are fellow pros Ken Jackson and Fouad Abiad. He also had previously trained for a stint at Westside Barbell under legendary powerlifting coach Louie Simmons.

The news about Meadows is the latest in a strange week for bodybuilding fans. It was only a few days ago that the news about the death of Luke Sandoe was shared. Support for Meadows was shared by many within the sport including by his friend and reigning Mr. Olympia, Brandon Curry.

“We are taking some hits as of late! I just got word that my friend @mountaindog1 suffered a heart attack! Please lift him up in prayer! I’m hearing that he’s going to be ok but let me tell you-this is one incredible man. A good, decent and genuine man that has a passion and love for the sport of bodybuilding! He’s one man that I’ve admired for a very long time and I’m so sad to hear this news. Please lift him up in prayer y’all! 💪🏿🙏🏿 Talk soon brother!”
