Powerlifter Seun Jubril of the 82.5-kilogram class is the new USA Powerlifting (USAPL) raw record holder for the deadlift. On Nov. 6, 2022, Jubril entered the 2022 USAPL Michigan State Championships, and he used his last attempt on the deadlift to pull 357.5 kilograms (788.2 pounds) raw to set the new record. The USAPL shared the moment in the Instagram reel below:

Weighing in at 81.5 kilograms (179.7 pounds), Jubril approached the barbell, took a sumo stance, reached down to grab the bar with what appeared to be a hook grip, and started his attempt. Once the weight broke the floor, Jubril made quick work of the lift. He stood tall until he received the down command. He was wearing an approved singlet and a weightlifting belt during the pull. The lift was called good, and the crowd in attendance erupted with approval. The massive pull was 4.38 times Jubril’s body weight.
Overall, Jubril went eight for nine on the day, with his only miss coming on his second attempt on the deadlift — 342.5 kilograms (755.2 pounds). He placed first in his weight class, and his top lifts for the meet are below:
2022 USAPL Michigan State Championships | 82.5KG | Seun Jubril
- Squat — 250 Kilograms (551 pounds)
- Bench Press — 182.5 Kilograms (402.4 pounds)
- Deadlift — 357.5 Kilograms (788 pounds)
- Total — 790 Kilograms (1,741.4 pounds)
Jubril’s new USAPL raw record exceeded the previous one of 357 kilograms (787.1 pounds) set by Angelo Fortino at the 2022 USAPL Mega Nationals. Had this been an international meet, Jubril would have a USAPL world record to his credit. According to Open Powerlifting, Jubril’s previous best deadlift was 340 kilograms (749.5 pounds) at the 2022 USAPL Raw Strength Summer Showdown in July.

There’s a chance that Jubril will look to break the elusive 800-pound mark at his next meet, but he hadn’t shared when that would be as of this writing. If he can pull it off, he would be the first USAPL lifter to break that mark. If he has his eyes on the all-time world record, he has a way to go. Blake Lehew holds that record with his lift of 382.5 kilograms (843.4 pounds) set at the 2022 USPA Hybrid Showdown IV meet in Miami, FL.
