Yesterday evening, USA Weightlifting announced the qualifying totals for the national 2019 competitive weightlifting season. Last year, we saw qualifying totals increase slightly in some weight classes due to more athletes competing and the categories becoming more competitive, but this year is slightly different, as all of the weight class recently changed.
The newly formulated weight classes — which were announced by the IWF in early July — are being contested by USA Weightlifting for the first time at a national level event at the American Open Series 3 (AO3) competition. In less than a month, more than 1,600 athletes (yes, you read that correctly) will be taking the platform in Las Vegas, Nevada to compete in the new weight classes.
