Mat Fraser and Cassidy Lance-Mcwherter Win 2018 CrossFit® Open

Last weekend, we concluded the final week of this year’s CrossFit® Open workouts. After a week of anticipation, CrossFit HQ has finalized the scores for the 2018 CrossFit Open.

After five weeks of grueling 2018 CrossFit Open workouts, we encountered many highs and lows and the elite stood tall through it all. Mat Fraser dominated the men’s individual open leaderboard finishing with an unreal 97 points. For the women, Cassidy Lance-Mchwherter finished in the top spot and fended off a close second place finish from Kara Saunders.

2018 CrossFit Open Winners

Fraser’s finish created the biggest margin between first and second place finishers CrossFit ever seen during the CrossFit Open. Second place went to CrossFit Games veteran Alex Vigneault with 440 points, which equates to a 343 point spread. For reference, the previous largest spread for the Open came from Samantha Briggs back in 2013 with her 128 point spread.

Lance-Mcherter finished with 189 points and Kara Saunders was close behind with 193 points. For a majority of the Open, Saunders sat in second and continually closed the gap between herself and first place. Lance-Mcwherter’s 10th place finish in workout 18.5 was enough to keep her lead over Saunders by 4 points, even though Saunders took home first for the women in the final workout.

The point spreads between first and tenth place for the men and women varied pretty greatly. For example, between first and tenth place for the men there was over a 700 point spread. Then for the women, there was only a spread of a little over 200 points.

CrossFit Open Workout 18.5 vs. 11.6 vs. 12.5

The home stretch 18.5 workout was wrapped up with a fan voted repeat of infamous CrossFit Open Workout 11.6, which was also done as Open Workout 12.5. This allowed many of CrossFit’s top athletes to demonstrate just how far they’ve come over the years.

To provide context, Josh Bridges finished first in 2011’s workout with 169 reps and Danny Henry hit 163 reps in 2012 (Bridges didn’t compete that year). For the women, Fortune Santos took first with 168 reps and Camille Leblanc-Bazinet completed 173 reps in 2012.

In 2018, over 100 male and 50 female athletes topped these previous scores. Granted, there are more competitors in 2018 compared to these years, but the workout was consistent, so the increase in reps is impressive.
