Team USA is having quite the run at the rescheduled 2020 Pan American Weightlifting Championships. The event, which is taking place in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, is scheduled from April 18-25, 2021. More than halfway over, there’s been a handful of impressive performances. More recently, it was 20-year-old CJ Cummings who took home a gold medal at 73-kilograms and set a new American snatch record of 155 kilograms in the process.

Behind Cummings in second place was Venezuela’s Julio Mayora who totaled 341 kilograms and logged the heaviest snatch of the day at 156 kilos for a Pan American record. Following CJ Cummings for Team USA was American Harrison Maurus at 81 kilograms. He ended up in third place with a 150-kilogram snatch and a 190-kilogram clean & jerk for a total of 340 kilograms.
The women on Team USA have been utterly dominant thus far. Cecily Kyle swept gold at 45 kilograms and set a new American clean & jerk record of 96 kilograms (211.6 pounds). Then, Jourdan Delacruz had what may be one of the best performances of her entire career. In the 49-kilogram division, Delacruz went six for six, winning gold and laying claim to both the American and Pan American records for the snatch, clean & jerk, and total. Taylor Turner Wilkins did a great job following Delacruz’s tough act. She placed third overall at 59 kilograms but set three new American records — a 95-kilogram snatch, a 122-kilogram clean & jerk, and a 217-kilogram total.

More Lifting to Come
There’s still a whole lot of lifting set to go down at the Pan American Championships. So far, the United States sits in second place overall on the leaderboard. They have six medals — three gold, one silver, and two bronze. Colombia is leading the pack with seven medals; four gold, two silver, and one bronze. Mexico is in third place, Venezuela is in fourth, and Canada is in fifth.
According to the IWF calendar, 2020 Pan Ams will conclude on April 25, 2021. We will see if Team USA can ride this momentum through July when they compete on the world stage at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
