CrossFit Games to Undergo Cultural Review to Improve Inclusivity

More action will be taken to become more inclusive for the sport.

In a recent Instagram post, the CrossFit Games have announced that they’ll be undergoing an internal cultural review. What this entails is briefly outlined within their post; check it out below.

For the global community, this is a watershed moment, a time to look inward and reflect on where we have been and where we are going. The CrossFit Games will undergo a cultural review to examine diversity and opportunities for inclusion. For us, this starts with:

  • Commissioning an external analysis and review of diversity and cultural representation.
  • Producing media that represents and creates opportunities for the Black community and underrepresented cultures.
  • Continuing to collect, organize, and circulate feedback internally while consulting with diversity experts.

This is the start of a continuing process that will take time to execute well. We recognize it’s not enough to say this. CrossFit is working to develop a consistent response rooted in action. Thank you for your patience as we work alongside the community to improve in this area. #CrossFitGames #CrossFit

The logistics of what exactly their initiatives will look are still not public, and the comments, as with many of their posts before this, are turned off, so it’s tough to accurately gauge how the community is responding to this message. However, it appears the CrossFit Games are trying to put their best foot forward to work towards a more inclusive sport.

To say that CrossFit as a whole has had a tumultuous past few weeks would be an understatement.

The chain of events started when CrossFit’s Founder Greg Glassman’s made controversial tweets in regard to George Floyd’s Death. These tweets then resulted in a sharp and quick backlash from the community and athletes from all walks of life. Then less than a week later, Glassman announced his resignation and Dave Castro was appointed as the new CEO. It’s been a whirlwind of events to say the least, check out the video below for more background.

With over 1,000 CrossFit affiliates announcing their intention to cut ties and handfuls of top athletes already withdrawn from the Games, it’s going to be interesting to see how the 2020 CrossFit Games unfold.
