Watch Bodybuilder Kai Greene Do His First CrossFit WOD In Times Square
On March 10, 2021, the three-time Mr. Olympia runner-up Kai Greene was featured in a video on the Buttery Bros’ YouTube channel that had the famed bodybuilder performing his first-ever CrossFit WOD. The Buttery Bros, comprised of Heber Cannon and Marston Sawyers, are former CrossFit HQ employees who produced The Fittest — a documentary about the 2019 CrossFit Games — and have a flair for epic graphics and hyped-up energy levels. Greene’s energy seemed to be a match made in heaven as they made their way to Times Square, NY in 12-degree weather to move some barbells and build a sweat.
The WOD of choice? Hero WOD “Randy.” Here’s what it consists of:
- 75 power snatches for time.
The athlete is allowed to break up the reps however they’d like. “Randy” calls for male competitors to lift 75 pounds. From the looks of the video, the 290-pound Greene upped the ante to 135 pounds. Unfortunately for Greene, he never performed a snatch before. Fortunately for Greene, he is immensely strong.

Greene completed all 75 reps in a time of six minutes and 40 seconds. According to WODwell, that is an intermediate-level time (between six and eight minutes). “Elite times” are considered to be anything within four minutes.
Greene did 33 reps unbroken before taking his first breather. He revved back up and continued until he hit rep 60. His final set of 15 closed the books on his first-ever CrossFit WOD.
After the workout, Greene and the Buttery Bros went to the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital to supply the staff with Reign Energy Drink (who sponsored the video) and to thank the medical personnel for all they’ve done and continue to do during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Day Before The WOD
The day before the trio hit up Times Square to power snatch amidst the bustling eyes of NYC residents and tourists alike, Greene and the Buttery Bros met up with Greene to take on a leg session (which quickly turned fully body). They also got some greenscreen footage which allowed for all of the video’s electrifying graphics.
Green led the Buttery Bros through a plethora of exercises — adductors, donkey kicks, hamstring curls, Romanian deadlifts, leg extensions, front squats, and even a few sets of the Jefferson squat. Greene wasn’t quite done and took the Bros through some upper body training as well with some lat pulldowns, chest flyes on cables, lateral raises, skull crushers, triceps pushdowns, and biceps curls.

2021 CrossFit Open
After a successful few days, the Buttery Bros, with high spirits and sore muscles, parted ways with Greene. A hop, skip, and a transition later and they share that they will be covering and competing in the 2021 CrossFit Open from Salt Lake City, UT with the first workout (21.1) kicking off on March 11, 2021.
