It’s official, Ben Smith is going to the 2019 Reebok CrossFit® Games.
Earlier this week, Ben Smith shared a post on his Instagram page highlighting a 330 lb hang clean and clean and wrote, “330 today. Starting to feel like myself again. I mean… I’d go throw down hard next week if the wildcard opportunity came up… What do y’all think? #Ben11?”
Since that initial post, a campaign then started on social media titled “getbensmithtothegames”, and CrossFit HQ has answered the call. In fact, if you scroll down through that original post’s comments, then you’ll see handfuls of notes from top Games athletes encouraging the invite to become a reality. So while CrossFit may not have an Instagram page at this time, it’s nice to see that they are still actively observing the community.
Yesterday, it was confirmed on Ben Smith’s Instagram page that he will be attending the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games after accepting a Wildcard invite that was granted to him.
After accepting the invite, Smith shared his gratitude for his fans on his Instagram page writing,
You all are THE GREATEST fans in the world, I thank you all! See you in Madison!!! Let’s get some. #WildCard #StopTaggingDave#ItsGameTime #CrossFitGames2019
Smith, the 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games champion, and podium finisher in 2011, 2013, and 2016 is arguably one of the most decorated athletes in the sport, and the community is absolutely ecstatic to see him get the chance to throw down once again in 2019.
And on the topic of Wildcard invites, Smith is now the second official athlete to have received an invite through this means for the 2019 Games. In May, Hunter McIntyre also received a Wildcard invite which stirred quite the controversy.
