Giants Live Issues 505-Kilogram (1,113.3-Pound) Deadlift Challenge With $55,000 Reward

The 2022 World Deadlift Championship may see multiple strongmen attempt an all-time world record.

The 2021 Giants Live World Open, won by Evan Singleton, featured the 2021 World Deadlift Championships (WDC). That pair of events will occur again at the 2022 Giants Live World Tour Open, scheduled for Aug. 6, 2022, at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales. For the 2021 WDC, Giants Live posted a bounty of $50,000 on a new all-time deadlift world record of 505 kilograms (1,113.3 pounds) — four kilograms over 2018 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) champion Hafthor Björnsson‘s 501-kilogram (1,104.5-pound) lift — the heaviest deadlift ever pulled.

Giants Live is upping the ante for 2022. On March 8, 2022, Giants Live posted to their Instagram that they will award $55,000 to anyone who can deadlift 505 kilograms (1,113.3 pounds). Giants Live is accepting emails to [email protected] that those who believe they are strong enough to compete in the 2022 WDC can plead their case for a wildcard invite. Entries for wildcard invites close on June 1, 2022.

World Record Deadlift Attempts

Since Björnsson’s 501-kilogram deadlift eclipsed 2017 WSM champion Eddie Hall‘s milestone 500-kilogram deadlift, only a few athletes have gotten close to joining them in the 500-kilogram deadlift club. Ivan Makarov and Peiman Maheripourehir are arguably the athletes closest to successfully matching or exceeding Björnsson’s record.

Makarov has successfully hit 490 kilograms (1,080.3 pounds) and narrowly missed a 502-kilogram (1,106.7-pound) deadlift on the World’s Ultimate Strongman (WUS) “Feats of Strength” series in October 2020. Maheripourehir has deadlifted 492 kilograms (1,084.7 pounds) in training and gotten the nod of approval from Hall, who suggested that Maheripourehir will eventually break the record. In an Instagram caption, Hall wrote:

[Maheripourehir] looking super strong and ready for 505 kilograms. Wish you all the strength, brother, be great, get you over to Giants Live to make it 100 percent and make it go viral.

The 2022 WDC will likely function as an event in the 2022 Giants Live World Open as it did in 2021. However, if that’s the case, athletes competing solely in the 2022 WDC will not affect the 2022 Giants Live World Tour Open leaderboard.
