Making his Olympic Games debut for Team Canada, Pascal Plamondon set new Canadian Senior Records this morning in the Clean & Jerk and Total.
Plamondon, the 2016 Pan American Championships bronze medalist, successfully opened with 150KG in the snatch, and completed 155KG on his 3rd attempt. Plamondon looked strong in both lifts leading up to Rio and was hitting 150 in the Rio training hall during his last heavy sessions before Olympic competition.
Flanked by Canadian National Coaches Gilles Poirier and Guy Marineau, the Sherbrooke, QC native made a good lift of 185KG on his 2nd attempt and completed 190KG on his 3rd attempt in the Clean & Jerk.
The 190KG clean and jerk broke the previous record of 189KG that he set in April of this year. Plamondon’s 345KG total broke the previous record of 343KG that he set at the 2015 Pan American Games in July of last year. The 23 year old goes home with multiple personal bests and new national records under his belt.
Through the B session, Plamondon is in 3rd place after the 12 man session completed. Tonight at 6PM EST will be the 85KG A session with 11 additional athletes in a very deep and competitive weight class.
On Wednesday evening, the lone female Canadian Olympian for Weightlifting competed in the 69KG woman’s category. Marie-Eve Beuchemin-Nadeau competed lifts of 98KG in the snatch and 130KG in the clean and jerk to place 9th at her 2nd Olympic Games.
