After winning the 2023 HYROX World Championships in Manchester, UK, on May 26, 2023, Lauren Weeks scored gold again at the first US race of the 2024 season. In the men’s division, the podium saw some new faces, including Pelayo Menendez, who claimed victory by 30 seconds over Eric Williams.

2023 HYROX New York Recap

The 2023 HYROX New York race was the first two-day event in the US of the 2023/2024 season. It allowed athletes to compete in various events throughout the weekend. HYROX women’s world record holder Meg Jacoby appeared on day two after setting a new world record for women’s doubles go-ruck division with Jarine Klingberg the previous day.

Women’s Division

Weeks remains an absolute year-round force in competition. She was trailed by the 2022 HYROX World Champion, Kris Rugloski, by about three minutes. Terra Jackson crossed the finish line 17 seconds behind Rugloski.

Weeks maintained a strong lead over the rest of the field. Other than the small gap of 17 seconds between second and third place, the times were spread relatively wide down the top 10. Weeks vocalized that she did not feel strong on the sled push — she scored the sixth fastest time on that station. Although Weeks had the fifth fastest time in the lunges, she ranked either first or second in the other six positions.

Men’s Division

Menendez made his pro HYROX debut in Houston four months prior to this race. He ranked 20th overall in Houston with the third-fasted sled pull time. He has a 12-year history as an endurance athlete. Runner-up Eric Williams is also new to HYROX. This race was tight, with first through third separated by 39 seconds.

Due to the huge turnout, there were multiple men’s heats, and the top three men’s finishers did not all race each other. Newcomer Nick Ryker, known for his DekaFit and Spartan Race performances, placed fourth overall. Ryker and Williams battled in the first men’s heat, with the latter passing the former at the wall balls. In a separate heat, Menendez raced against Newby.

What’s Next with HYROX

HYROX will not have much action over the next several months. The 2023/2024 HYROX season has a short break until it debuts in Australia over the summer. New race dates and locations are continuously added to the HYROX calendar.
