March 29, 2024 by Nicky Freymond

By Nicky Freymond and Teaganne Finn

The next stage of the 2024 CrossFit Games season is approaching quickly as qualifying athletes and teams move on to Quarterfinals. The Open brought what felt like a “back to basics” sensibility with three classic CrossFit-style workouts and even gave athletes a chance to get their first bar muscle up.

Among the changes to the CrossFit Games season was the expansion of the pool of athletes who qualify for the Quarterfinals. Now, the top 25 percent of athletes qualify, compared to only 10 percent in previous years.

While CrossFit HQ’s motives for this change have been questioned, the expansion has undoubtedly excited the community as more athletes get to continue their competitive season.

In this article, we’re looking at what you need to know for the 2024 CrossFit Quarterfinals, including:

  • Important dates for Individuals
  • Important dates for the Team division

Athlete Checklist

  • Invitation email from CrossFit HQ
  • $50 registration
  • Registered judge (Has taken the 2024 Judges Course)
  • Video requirements (See rulebook sections 2.08)
  • Floor plans
  • Scores and videos submitted

How the CrossFit Quarterfinals Work

The Quarterfinals competition is held virtually across all divisions. There are three main components to the online event:

  1. Prepare: Athletes should have a registered judge, all required equipment and floor space, and video requirements prepared before Thursday of the competition week.
  2. Work: Once the athlete has registered, they will be able to submit a score and video for each workout during the corresponding submission window
  3. Submit: Teams will do their Quarterfinal workouts first and have two submission windows to abide by: April 3-6 and April 6-8. Individuals and Age Group athletes will submit their scores during two submission windows: April 17-20 and April 20-22. There are no exceptions for late submissions.

CrossFit Quarterfinals Video Submission Guidelines

Athletes, both Individual and Age Group, near the top of the leaderboard (for each workout and overall) are required to have both:

  • Registered Judge
  • Valid Video Submission

See Section 2.08 in the 2024 CrossFit Games Rulebook for details regarding the number of athletes required to submit videos.

Keep in mind: CrossFit HQ can request a video from any Quarterfinal athlete at any time during the competition.

Failure to provide a valid video will result in a score of “0” for the requested test.

If a video is invalidated (see standards in Rulebook section 1.23), the athlete will be disqualified from competition and his or her scores will be removed from the leaderboard.

Guidelines for Athletes Entering Multiple Divisions

Athletes competing in the Individual and/or Age Group divisions are also eligible to compete on a team roster in Quarterfinals; however, specific regulations apply.

  • – The athlete must have been listed on the team’s roster prior to the first workout of the Open (section 1.12).
  • – Teams will declare their Competition Team roster during Quarterfinals registration.
  • – Only these four to six athletes are eligible to represent the team for the remainder of the season (section 2.03).
  • – Each team must select two men and two women from the Competition Roster to complete the entirety of the Quarterfinal tests together. No substitutes may be used for any reason, including injury.
  • – If qualified, athletes are allowed to compete in both the Online Age Group Semifinal and an in-person Semifinal (Individual or Team, not both).

How to Qualify for the 2024 CrossFit Semifinals

The top 40 men and women and the top 30 teams from each of the seven regions qualify for their respective Semifinal. The regions are as follows:

  • Asia
  • Europe
  • North America West
  • Oceania
  • North America East
  • South America
  • Africa

This differs from last year in that the number of athletes who qualify for Semifinals from the Quarterfinals is the same, regardless of their region.
