2021 HYROX Virtual Championships of Fitness Results — Lauren Weeks and Joshua Wichtrup Take Gold

Four divisions competed and four new champions were crowned.

The HYROX Virtual Championships of Fitness took place on Feb. 20, 2021, and four athletes stood atop the leaderboard of their respective divisions to claim the title of champion. Here are each of the four divisions and who ranked as its number one:

  • Equipment, HYROX Men — Joshua Wichtrup, 32 points
  • Equipment, HYROX Women — Lauren Weeks, Four points
  • Bodyweight, HYROX Men — Forrest Bouge, 13 points
  • Bodyweight, HYROX Women — Nicki Johnson, 12 points

Each division competed in three events. Athletes scored points equivalent to their finish and were then added up. The lowest score won. For example, if an athlete finished first in an event, they scored just one point. A perfect score of three straight event wins would have been three points.

As this was an entirely virtual competition, competitors were allowed to perform the workouts assigned to their division in any order they wanted. Athletes recorded their workouts and were required to announce the date and time. HYROX recommended athletes use the WODProof App, but they were allowed to record with any device (camera, smartphone, etc.). HYROX also recommended “YouTube, WODProof, WeTime, or similar apps/services that provide links” for judges to review workouts.

HYROX Virtual Championship Events

The workouts were the same across the men’s and women’s divisions, except that the weights in the equipment division were different. Here were the three workouts and how the champions placed in each:

Equipment Divisions

Workout One

3,200 meter run for time.

  • Wichtrup — 11th place
  • Weeks — Second place

This was the only event of the three that Weeks did not place first.

Workout Two

15 minutes of:

  • 1,000-meter row
  • 50 wall balls
  • 1,000-meter row

Then for the remaining time:

  • Max rep wall balls

Men used nine-kilogram (20-pound) medicine balls with a target height of three meters (10 feet).
Women used six-kilogram (14-pound) medicine balls with a target height of 2.7 meters (9 feet).

Each athlete’s score was the total amount of reps/meters of all movements combined. If needed, the tiebreaker was the fastest time completing the first 50 wall balls.

  • Wichtrup — Sixth place
  • Weeks — First place

Workout Three

For Time:

  • 30 hand-release push-ups
  • 60 single-arm devils press
  • 90 dumbbell lunges (Total)

Men used two 15-kilogram (35-pound) dumbbells.
Women used two 10-kilogram (20-pound) dumbbells.

  • Wichtrup — 15th place
  • Weeks — First place

Wichtrup won his division by just five points. The men’s podium was very tight at the end of the competition. Tom Hogan of Ireland placed second overall with 37 points, and Gavin Hogarth of Great Britain finished third with 39 points.

The women’s division was the closest of all four and was a battle primarily between Weeks and the second-place overall finisher Rachel Schreiber of the United States. Schreiber placed third, second, and second in the three events, respectively, for a total of seven points — just three points shy of Weeks.

Bodyweight Divisions

As with the equipment divisions, all the workouts for the bodyweight divisions were the same.

Workout One

3,200 meter run for time.

  • Bouge — Fifth place
  • Johnson — Second place

Workout Two

12 minutes of:

  • 20 five-meter prone-to-sprints
  • 50 squats
  • 50 meters of burpee broad jumps
  • 50 sit-ups
  • 50 meters of walking lunges

Then for any remaining time:

  • Max five-meter prone-to-sprints

Each athlete’s score was the total amount of reps/meters of all movements combined. If needed, the tiebreaker was the fastest time completing the first 50 meter burpee broad jumps.

  • Bouge — Seventh place
  • Johnson — Sixth place

Workout Three

For time:

  • 30 hand-release push-ups
  • 60 burpees
