Forward to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games
Five out of the eight members that make up Team USA heading to train in Hawaii prior to traveling to Tokyo for the Olympic Games scored gold at the 2021 USAW National Championships. Three of them either attempted or scored new American records — Rogers set three new records, Nye and Maurus both made record attempts.
Several of Team USA’s lifters are in extremely competitive weight classes. CJ Cummings will contend with Shi Zhiyong of China who holds all the records in the 73-kilogram class and won gold in 2016. Caine Wilkes will battle in the weight class that is home to arguably the greatest weightlifter of all time, Lasha Talakhadze of Georgia. But if the 2021 USAW National Championships are any indicator of what is to come in Tokyo, then Team USA features multiple contenders who could reach the podium.
