Medeiros’ Team GOWOD Takes Slight Lead into Day 2 of the 2024 TYR Wodapalooza
Day one of the elite teams competition is over and just as we saw with the individual competition, we witnessed some early surprises on the leaderboard as the rain once again poured in Miami.
“Elite Team Event 1: Bike Race”
One of the favorite teams to win it all, Team GOWOD made up of Justin Medeiros, Jay Crouch, and Willy Georges, took “Elite Team Event 1: Bike Race” in an incredibly tight race to the finish.
Interestingly enough, this event only consisted of a team 5k run on a bike trail through the woods, in a site away from Bayfront Park.
The event finish was so close in fact, that only five total seconds separated the top 13 teams.
Other stacked teams Team TYR (Garard, Pepper, Hopper) and Team Picsil (Khrennikov, Panchik, Fernandez) went second and third in the event, setting the stage for the following two events where these three teams would still be battling it out amongst each other.
“Elite Team Event 2: Worms Can’t Swim”
This time GOWOD and Picsil flipped places as Picsil took first and GOWOD third, creating an overall tie on the leaderboard with the tiebreak going to GOWOD thanks to their event win in event 1.
Team TYR finished sixth, retaining their third-place overall position, but only four points ahead of the Ombre Hombres (Ohlsen, Smith, Morakinyo).
This event shook things up on the rest of the leaderboard as we got to see which teams had been practicing with the worm, but also which individual athletes were comfortable in the water.
While some teams had great communication on the floor, positions dropped as their swimming inefficiency became clear.
Then the rain started to pour.
“Elite Team Event 3: Uno. Dos. Tres.”
By the time the event started, the teams were facing down strict handstand pushups, wall walks, handstand holds, front squats, and hang cleans all while the event floor and handstand plexiglass were soaked from the rain.
Many athletes slipped during their wall walks, but the rain eventually started to clear up a bit by the time heat two took the floor.
Ombre Hombres, who were just four points behind a podium position, put in a phenomenal performance and took the event, propelling themselves into a third-place overall position.
Team TYR, unfortunately, had a bad, ninth-place place finish and now sits 28 points behind Ombre Hombres to end the day.
We have one more day left of competition and it looks like it is going to come down to these three teams.
Whoever can avoid mistakes will likely be your 2024 Men’s TYR WAZ Team champ.
