Our Predictions for Age Group and Team Quarterfinals Tests
The 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games season is well underway with the Age Group and Team divisions taking on their respective Quarterfinal tests this weekend. A deeper dive into the Team competition can be found here and a rundown of the Age Group division is here.
The floor plans for the Age Group, along with the Team division were released to athletes on Monday. Morning Chalk Up’s CrossFit analyst and CrossFit L3 coach Joey Adduci and CrossFit L1 coach and writer Teaganne Finn share their predictions for the workouts.
Age Group Predictions
Event 1
Summary: The way the dumbbells are set up it seems likely there will be some type of DB walking movement involved. The pull-up bar also indicates some sort of pulling movement, and much like the individual Quarterfinals it very well could be a combination of movements increasing in difficulty.
The Floor Plan
The Prediction
2 rounds for time:
- 50-ft DB Front Rack Walking Lunge
- 30 Toes-to-bar
- 50-ft DB Front Rack Walking Lunge
- 20 Chest-to-bar
- 50-ft DB Front Rack Walking Lunge
- 10 Bar Muscle Ups
- Dumbbells: 50s/35s
Event 2
Summary: This workout we already know has two parts. The first involves a lot of set up and equipment for a chipper type workout perhaps. While the second part is likely a heavy lift of some sort. We saw GHDs in the Individual Quarterfinals and wall facing handstand push-ups.
The Floor Plan
The Prediction
2a, For time:
- 60 Box jump overs 24/20
- 45 GHD sit-ups
- 30 Clean and Jerks 155/105
- 15 Wall facing handstand push-ups
2b:
- Build to a max clean and jerk
Event 3
Summary: Who doesn’t love a bench press? We saw bench presses in the Age Group Semifinals last year and seems like they’re bringing them back again but earlier in the competition. We also have the rope climb and tape lines, which are likely to indicate some handstand walking.
The Floor Plan
The Prediction
7-minute AMRAP
- 5-4-3-2-1
- Bench Press 225/155
- Rope Climbs
- Max handstand walks in time remaining
Score is the total 25-ft handstand walks completed and the time to complete the first part is the tiebreak. Each 25-ft handstand walk counts as one rep.
Event 4
Summary: This workout is simple, but likely a dirty one. All we have is a rower and a barbell for event 4. Our prediction is an AMRAP of sorts with a similar rowing scheme to the Individual Quarterfinals workout, but instead of a midline interference we have front squats.
The Floor Plan
The Prediction
- 20-minute AMRAP
- 1,000m row
- 30 front squats 135/95
- 500m row
- 15 front squats 185/125
Team Predictions
Event 1
Summary: The first team test offers minimal equipment— just a barbell. Our guess is there will be some variation of a handstand walk, along with synchronized barbell movements in a chipper format.
The Floor Plan
The Prediction
For time
- 3 Handstand walks (25-ft = 1 rep)
- 9 Synchro front squats (225/155)
- 6 Handstand walks
- 15 Synchro front squats (185/125)
- 9 Handstand walks
- 21 Synchro front squats (135/95)
Event 2
Summary: The prediction for event 2 is a bit more complicated with the pairs going in a I go, You go style. Since this is the team competition we may very well see the skills bump up, therefore legless rope climbs are likely to be programmed. A common movement programmed with rope climbs are deadlifts and we may see those in a synchronized way.
The Floor Plan
The Prediction
Female pair performs:
- 500m row
- 15 synchro deadlift 185
- 6 Legless rope climb
- Then, female pair tags in the male pair and they perform:
- 500m row
- 15 synchro deadlift 275
- 6 Legless rope climb
The team performs a total of 3 rounds for time. Only one pair is working at a time while the other rests.
Event 3
Summary: This event, much like Age Group event 2, has a two part workout. This we can assume is a semi-fast chipper followed by a heavy barbell. We see the GHD machine again and a pull up bar, assuming the teams will be testing some higher skills it is likely we see a bar muscle up.
The Floor Plan
The Prediction
3a:
One person goes at a time:
- 60 GHD sit-ups
- 30 Bar muscle ups
- 15 Clean and Jerks 155/105
The order is male A goes, then Female A, followed by Male B and Female B. The score is the total time.
3b:
- Build to a one-rep-max clean and jerk
Event 4
Summary: The floor plan for event 4 is similar to event 1, but instead of a barbell we have dumbbells. We predict some overhead walking lunges are on the docket and perhaps even some devils press with the heavier dumbbells.
The Floor Plan
The Prediction
For time
- 9 DB Devil Press 70s/50s
- 50-ft DB Overhead Walking Lunge
- 7 DB Devil Press
- 50-ft DB Overhead Walking Lunge
- 5 DB Devil Press
- 50-ft DB Overhead Walking Lunge
Male A and Female A perform the nine reps, followed by the lunges. Then, Male B and B follow the same pattern. Pairs will switch each round until the workout is completed.
Please note these are just predictions. We had some fun with this and really tried to guess what CrossFit HQ has in store. Good luck to all the athletes competing!
