2024 CrossFit Games Will Feature New Movements, According to Dave Castro

July 17, 2024 by Nicky Freymond

CrossFit’s General Manager of Sport, Dave Castro, has taken on the hefty task of interviewing all 80 individual athletes from the 2024 CrossFit Games leading up to the big showdown in Fort Worth, TX.

The details: Throughout many of these interviews, Castro has shared details of the upcoming events, schedules, and his mindset heading into the Games.

  • In his conversation with Emily Rolfe, he expressed that the workout “Chad 1000x” would have a twist on the original version.
  • When speaking with Victoria Campos, Castro shared that “Chad 1000x” would be completed on Saturday morning.
  • In his interview with Julia Kato, he indicated that the first event, involving a run and a swim, would be completed “very early.”

Each segment ends with Castro prompting the athletes to ask him questions. In Italian CrossFit athlete Elisa Fuliano’s interview, she asked the following:

  • “Are we going to see any new movements or exercises this year at the Games?”

As is always the case, Castro didn’t give away too much, but he did respond by saying, “New to the CrossFit Games, yes.”

He went on to explain that these movements, to which he was referring, have been a part of the sport and shouldn’t be “new” to anyone, although they have never been tested at the Games.

Although he was speaking in plurals, he wasn’t specific as to whether he was referring to one or more movements or exercises.

Some history: In recent years, we have seen new movements programmed at the Games, although they have surfaced off and on at affiliates, on CrossFit.com, or in earlier stages of the season, like in the Open or Quarterfinals.

In 2015, athletes first saw the peg board in “Pedal to the Metal.” In 2021, Event 4 featured wall walks, and in 2022, the “Skill Speed Medley” had competitors completing double under crossovers.

Speculation is running wild as fans try to guess what we could see. Could it be the devil’s press? Knees to elbows? Triple-unders? Or possibly even Turkish get-ups? We’ll find out soon enough.
