In early 2025, Men’s Health visited the home of science educator and innovator Bill Nye, best known for hosting the iconic, award-winning show, Bill Nye the Science Guy, which aired from 1993 to 1999.
At 69, Nye still tinkers, but mostly with salads and popcorn popping. During the tour, his kitchen revealed a life built on consistency, pleasure, and science. Though his home gym is a humble, minimal setup, Nye is dedicated to staying in shape.
A Scientific Fridge?
Coconut water, a natural hydration beverage, is a staple in the Nye home. He always has Fairlife’s so-called “infinity milk,” explaining, “This is back when we were concerned about public health and respected germs and science.” High-pressure pasteurization is shown to preserve nutrients while eliminating pathogens. If an egg costs a dollar, it’s still a good value…so much protein.

Despite recent high egg costs, Nye insisted they’re a nutritional gem. Gram for gram, eggs are one of the most nutrient-dense and versatile foods.
Nye, a devout coffee drinker, turns to homemade popcorn as his midnight munch.
People say, ‘Well, you shouldn’t eat apples because they’re full of sugar.’ That’s why they’re good.

For those with blood sugar issues, limit high glycemic fruits, and combine them with fats and proteins.
Mediterranean Roots and Protein Picks
A proud devotee of the Mediterranean diet, Nye credited his French grandmother for instilling in him healthy dietary habits.
I was raised on what I think you all call a Mediterranean diet.
This diet is consistently linked to heart health and longevity. (3)(4)(5)
Nye’s go-to protein is chicken, but beans are another staple. Plant-based foods are integral to a balanced diet.
Nye’s salad dressing ritual involves rubbing salt like sandpaper on garlic to “liberate the oil,” he demonstrated. He then adds apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, and three oils and tops with greens.
Consistency Over Intensity
Nye strength trains three to four times weekly with his long-time trainer in his modest outdoor home gym. He combines free weights, bodyweight exercises, and mobility techniques.
“We’ve never been injured lifting weights in the 11 or 12 years,” Nye’s trainer noted, avoiding high-impact workouts, such as cross-training activities. “We’re too fragile.”
“Consistent exercise allows you to sleep better, eat better…you’re just happier,” Nye asserted. Weight training preserves muscle with age, while strength and muscle are predictors of longevity. (6)
Nye is an avid outdoor cyclist, preferring fresh air and views. “I don’t fully grasp stationary bikes,” he admitted. Nye’s fitness dreams? To do pull-ups and be ripped…in his mind.
