The 2016 European Weightlifting Championships have come to an end. The event, held in Forde, Norway and organized by the European Weightlifting Federation, came to an end on April 16th.
Just as notable as some truly impressive performances — including Georgia’s Lasha Talakhadze‘s new European superheavyweight snatch record of 212 kg, which we’ve embedded at the bottom of the article — were some big-name absences. Belarus’ Andrei Rybakou (silver medalist at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and world record holder in the 85 kilo snatch) was originally scheduled to compete before a suspension for Meldonium.
Tatiana Kashirina also missed the competition, citing a fear of a “setup” against Russian athletes and instead focusing on the Olympics in Rio. Her countrymen Aleksey Lovchev was recently suspended for a positive doping sample that caused significant controversy and backlash against testing protocols within the Russian lifting community.
Below is the full list of medalists in the snatch, clean & jerk, and total for each weight class. Full results are also listed by the EWF and IWF website.
