On the heels of The Mayhem Classic announcing that Ben Smith will be competing at their event in January, a current champion will also be there to take part in the inaugural Sanctional.
Three-time and reigning Fittest Woman on Earth Tia-Clair Toomey has been announced as a participant in the first Sanctional of the new year (and decade) that is being put on by four-time Fittest Man on Earth Rich Froning. Like the announcement about Smith, Toomey’s name was dropped on the Mayhem Classic Instagram page.
As of this writing, Toomey had yet to make any statements about taking part, but her name being added has certainly added some excitement and buzz to an event that already has had the CrossFit community talking. Toomey and Smith’s names are the only two that have been announced officially as competitors that will be in attendance on January 10-12, 2020.
Toomey’s participation automatically gives this event a lot of attention and prestige. For the athletes, they will be sharing a platform or field with one of the most decorated athletes in the sport’s history. For those that will be buying tickets, they get to see the reigning women’s champion of the sport in action which isn’t common outside of the CrossFit Games.
The Queensland, Australia native shouldn’t need to win this event to qualify for the 2020 Games. She is currently positioned as fourth overall at the most recent Open as well as first in Australia. Once those rankings become official, she will be considered the Australian champion and thus, earn a qualification to Madison this summer.
It might be that like Smith, Toomey would be using this event to gauge her abilities in a competitive environment. It would be similar to how she competed in 2019. She competed in Wodapalooza in early January and finished atop the podium. She also took part in the Rogue Invitational in May and won it as well. Of course, she went on to win the Games this past August.
