Harrison Maurus is an American weightlifter who currently competes in the -81kg weight class and is what one might call a big deal. Despite only being 19 years old, Maurus already owns multiple medals from the 2018 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Junior World Championships and a bronze medal from the 2019 Pan American Games.
He also holds five American records for the clean & jerk and total across the Junior and Senior divisions in the -81kg and -89kg weight classes. So it should come as no surprise that when Maurus took the stage at the 2020 Weightlifting World Cup in Rome, Italy, he would be a contender for the podium.

You can see in the slowed down replay in the clip that Maurus almost loses it, but he was able to stabilize and lock it out to secure an international personal record. This lift was also awarded the silver medal.
His 195kg (430lb) clean & jerk also won the silver. Check it out here courtesy of 1K’s Instagram page:
The clean looked super smooth from beginning to end. The jerk, like his snatch, looked shaky for a hot second before stabilizing for a clean lift. Maurus ultimately finished second overall. Here is the full breakdown of his performance in Rome:
- Snatch – 158kg (348lb) – Silver Medal
- Clean & Jerk – 195kg (430lb) – Silver Medal
- Total – 353kg (778lb) – Silver Medal
His clean & jerk and total were dangerously close to the American records he set at the 2018 World Weightlifting Championships of 200kg (441lb) and 357kg (787lb) respectively. Even his snatch was only 2kg (4.4lb) away from the standard 160kg (353lb) for the junior division American record.
Congratulations to Maurus for the tremendous performance in Rome and we look forward to seeing what more he has in store for competitions throughout 2020.
