It was announced on Thursday, April 30th that the 2020 CrossFit season for age group athletes has come to a close earlier than expected: the “Online Qualifier marks the end of the 2020 season for age group athletes.” This includes Masters and teen athletes, who will no longer be competing at the CrossFit Games.

The age group online qualifier (AGOQ) took place from March 12-16 when it was still expected the Games would take place in Madison, Wisconsin as normal.

But according to this announcement, there will no longer be “an in-person competition to crown the fittest in the CrossFit Games Age Groups.”

2019 vs. 2020

A review was conducted following the close of the 2020 AGOQ to determine the difference in submission numbers from the year prior. Here are some of the quick hits of what they found:

  • Submissions were down in every age group except:
    • Women (50-54) — increase of 24 submissions.
    • Girls (16-17) — increase of 1 submission.
    • Girls (14-15) — increase of 27 submissions.
  • The largest drop off in submissions were in:
    • Men (40-44) — decrease of 47 submissions.
    • Men (60+) — decrease of 42 submissions.
    • Boys (14-15) — decrease of 38 submissions.

2020 CrossFit Games

It was announced on April 16th that the 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games would “not be a public event” and that they would no longer take place starting July 29th in Madison, Wisconsin but instead in Aromas, California. Although CrossFit has shared this location change, a new date has yet to be confirmed.

“This year, there will not be an in-person competition to crown the fittest in the CrossFit Games Age Groups. Prize money will not be issued. The age group competition will resume when the season resets in 2021.”

For the age group athletes that did complete their submissions, the video review process to assess penalties was finished on April 29th. Standings can be viewed via the online qualifier leaderboard, which given the latest news rom HQ, one might now consider the unofficial placings of the CrossFit Games Age Groups.
