By the Numbers: 9 Intriguing Stats From the 2024 CrossFit Quarterfinals

May 7, 2024 by Scott Freymond

With the 2024 CrossFit Quarterfinals wrapped up and the leaderboards finalized, we are looking back at some compelling numbers before we move on.

Some of these stats may surprise you, but as Jay-Z said, “Men lie. Women lie. Numbers don’t.” So before the Individuals and Teams Semifinals start May 16 in Asia and Europe, take a look at our favorite Quarterfinals stats below:

1.) 14,270 – The number of total pounds lifted by Jeff Adler in Individual Workout 4.

  • Adler won the workout worldwide for the men with a score of 66 reps, notching the victory by three reps (or 735 pounds) over Jack Rozema.
  • On the women’s side, Olivia Kerstetter and Dani Speegle both completed 72 reps for a total of 10,580 pounds. Kerstetter took the top spot on the leaderboard, carding a tiebreak time of six seconds faster than Speegle.

2.) 11 – The number of Games appearances between the worldwide men and women winners of the 2024 Quarterfinals.

  • At 29 years old, Games veteran Jonne Koski is looking for his 10th appearance as an Individual.
  • Nineteen-year-old Emma Lawson is looking for her third Individual Games appearance after finishing second in 2023.

3.) 411 – The number of penalties given on Individual Quarterfinals Workout 1.

  • According to Mike Halpin’s data from Known and Knowable, 201 men and 210 women were penalized.
  • Dave Castro mentioned in his Week in Review video that they watched close to 1,000 videos, which equates to almost 1.000 hours.

4.) 788 – The number of places Sydney Wells dropped on Workout 1.

  • Sydney Wells’ season came to an abrupt end after receiving a 24 percent penalty on box step-ups, the highest percentage recorded.

5.) 3 – The heat in which Pat Vellner will start at the North America West Semifinal.

  • After receiving a 20 percent penalty on Workout 1, Vellner dropped from first to 22nd in the West. Good thing he is used to digging himself out of a hole.

6.) 3,600 – The number of age group athletes moving on to Semifinals.

  • The top 200 men and women in each division qualified to Semifinals from Quarterfinals. Between 10 and 40 individuals will qualify from Semifinals to the CrossFit Games, depending on the division.
  • The Masters and Teens will have their own championships, hosted by Legends and Pit Teen Throwdown, respectively.

7.) 1 – The place where Mirjam von Rohr finished any workout with burpees in 2024.

  • Von Rohr won Open Workout 24.1 and went on to win the Open. She then backed it up with a victory in Individual Quarterfinals Workout 2. She finished in 16th place in Europe and will move on to Semifinals. Her burpee prowess will not be on display, however, as there are none programmed in Semifinals this year.
  • She also won the IF3 European Championships in France on May 4. No surprise: She won the workout containing burpees.

8.) 24 – The number of women (out of 40) who competed at the 2023 CrossFit Games and are currently moving on to the 2024 CrossFit Semifinals (and are still in contention to return to the Games).

  • We already know that 16 (40 percent) of the Individual women from last year’s Games roster will not be competing at the 2024 Games for various reasons. The 24 who are still in the running will need to qualify in their respective region.

9.) 107 – The average finish in the four Quarterfinals workouts required to qualify for Semifinals in North America West (men).

  • Out of a field of 3,701 men, to finish in the last qualifying spot (40th) required an average finish of 107th place per workout. This was the lowest of any region, men or women.
  • The highest average finish required to qualify was 52nd place. This was in Asia on the women’s side, with a field of 481 athletes.
