In the Jan.20, 2022 edition of The Hopper emailed to CrossFit’s mailing list, CrossFit General Manager of Sport Justin Bergh shared what to expect throughout the 2022 CrossFit Games season. Additionally, he shared some insights regarding the company’s intentions to improve their transparency, programming, and communication for the 2023 CrossFit Games season and beyond.

I wanted to share with you all what is being discussed, what we’ve heard so far, and where we’re going.

Bergh offered details in four key areas he aims to improve CrossFit and its relationship with affiliates and athletes:

  1. Expectations and Vision
  2. Affiliate Inclusivity in Decision-Making
  3. Better (i.e., more direct) Communication
  4. Programming

The entire issue of January’s edition of The Hopper is available on this site via the CrossFit Games Instagram page.

The Top Priority

Following Bergh’s introduction in the email, he explains his focus on “providing clear vision and expectations” for CrossFit’s internal team. The leadership of that team is comprised of those who’ve worked in the CrossFit space for over a decade “as affiliate owners and Seminar Staff.”

Our top priority is executing the season we’ve announced to the absolute highest standard.

That top priority leads to Bergh’s confirmation that the 2022 CrossFit Games season will run as announced. This will allow affiliates and athletes alike to plan ahead better. Feedback from the “athletes in various divisions…around the world” during the 2022 season “will inform the 2023 season.” Details for the 2023 season are likely to release after the 2022 CrossFit Games.

Communication

Moving forward, CrossFit HQ plans to offer more direct lines of communication — The Hopper being one avenue of doing so. Additionally, information will be disseminated via the CrossFit Games Podcast and CrossFit’s studio shows. Additionally, pre-announcements for “important decisions” will be given ahead of time to improve awareness of those potentially affected.

CrossFit will engage in “constructive conversations” with competitors and affiliates to “create opportunities for athletes and event organizers.”

Programming

While Bergh did not state specifics regarding the 2022 season’s programming, he expressed awareness about programming being “appropriate to the capacity of those athletes” at each stage of competition.

We will…pursue…better opportunities for athletes at all ability levels to responsibly compete in our sport.

This might suggest that programming will scale in difficulty as the season progresses and the worldwide field narrows down to the group of elite athletes who qualify for the 2022 CrossFit Games.
