Lowlands Throwdown, Madrid Join The List Of Postponed Sanctionals
Early Monday morning the Madrid CrossFit Championships and the Lowlands Throwdown became the latest in a string of Sanctionals to fall victim to the COVID-19 restrictions, as officials announced via each event’s Instagram that the competition would be postponed. The announcement brings the total number of Sanctionals now postponed to twelve.
Things to keep in mind: As per the announcement, a new date for either event has not been selected, and event officials will be working with their collaborators to determine the new event date in the near future. The two events, along with the Atlas Games, Italian Showdown, and the West Coast Classic, have yet to determine their new date publicly after announcing their postponement.
- For Madrid: The previously registered athletes will automatically keep their registration for the new date once it’s selected, and registered athletes will be notified via email of all decisions and subsequent developments.
- Additional information about the IOQ2 is expected to be distributed to athletes and persons involved by the end of the week.
The Lowlands Throwdown was the only remaining regularly scheduled Sanctional competition in the month of May, and with the postponement, the effective delay of the Sanctionals season due to the coronavirus is now a full 12 weeks.
- Both the Netherlands and Spain currently sit in the top 10 countries worldwide in terms of confirmed cases and confirmed deaths from the coronavirus, with the number of reported cases in the Netherlands doubling in the past four days.
- The countries are currently in the midst of a travel ban, which prevents any non-European Union citizens from entering the territory until April 19, however that deadline could be extended if necessary.
Next up: The CanWest CrossFit Championships, currently scheduled for June 5-7.
As the situation continues to develop, we’ll be regularly updating our list of the new season schedule which can be found here.
