Reigning Champ Ricky Garard on Top after Day 1 at 2024 TYR Wodapalooza
Day 1 at Wodapalooza is officially over, and for the men’s division, it was one of the more interesting first competition days in recent memory.
Not only did we see a downpour of rain that caused multiple workouts to be changed, but we also had some unexpectedly low finishes from some of the sport’s top athletes.
The rain forced the kipping chest-to-bar pull-ups into strict conventional pull-ups and the hang cleans into deadlifts, favoring veteran athletes who were able to adapt on the fly.
Here are the top five on the leaderboard after Day 1:
- Ricky Garard – 252
- Patrick Vellner – 247.5
- Jack Farlow – 235.5
- Samuel Kwant – 234
- Brent Fikowski – 223.5
Roman Khrennikov is nowhere to be found in the top five overall after three events (four scored). That’s because he’s surprisingly in 14th overall with three finishes outside of the top 10.
With only two events left tomorrow, it is unlikely that he will make the podium.
Event 1: Double or Nothin’
Guilherme Malheiros kicked off the year at Wodapalooza with a bang as he hit a 310-pound snatch complex on Event 1. As the only man to hit 300+, the Brazilian took first place easily.
Bronislaw Olenkowicz missed his first attempt at 300 during the second round and then ran out of time while attempting the complex again. This ultimately caused him to finish with a final score of only 275 pounds and a 10th-place finish in the event.
Other favorites in the event, Fikowski and Farlow, both finished with 285 and 280, respectively, earning them both a top-five finish.
Both Ricky Garard and Patrick Vellner ended at 275 pounds and tied for 13th place to start the day.
Event 2: Cortadito
Colten Mertens called his shot and didn’t disappoint.
Mertens dominated this event from the very beginning, taking the win and beating runner-up Patrick Vellner by a margin of 35 seconds.
Samuel Kwant made a big comeback after a 17th place in Event 1, finishing fifth here and shooting up the leaderboard.
Fikowski finished 10th, taking the lead on the overall leaderboard and becoming the only man to have both finishes inside the top 10 up to this point.
Khrennikov had his second straight workout in 16th or worse.
Event 3: Deja Vu Parts 1 and 2
Ricky Garard closed out with two straight top-five finishes, which was enough to position himself atop the overall leaderboard to close out the day.
Samuel Kwant had back-to-back third-place finishes, giving himself three straight top-five finishes. Now he sits in fourth overall, only 1.5 points behind Jack Farlow in third.
Speaking of Farlow, he surprised a lot of people by showing everyone that he can do a lot more than just lift heavy. With three out of four finishes inside the top 10 and an average finish of 7.75, he heads into the second and final day in third overall, only 17 points behind Garard in first.
Fikowski started off strong in part 1, but had a disastrous 33rd-place finish in part 2, forcing him to fall from first to fifth.
Coming Up Tomorrow
Tomorrow, during the only swimming event, we will likely see the leaderboard shake up drastically once again as weaknesses are exposed.
We will also find out if Fikowski can find his way back onto the podium, and how the battle for first between Vellner and Garard will end up.
