The first two events of the 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games were recently posted on CrossFit’s Instagram page. Athletes will complete these during a time period called “Block 1.” Blocks 1 and 2 will take place Friday and blocks 3 and 4 will take place Saturday. These four blocks will make up the entirety of the Stage 1 phase for this year’s Games.

The events announced for block 1 are “Friendly Fran” and a 1-rep max front squat (which has a 20 minute time cap). Athletes must complete these workouts between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. in their local time zone.

1-Rep-Max Front Squat

Athletes establish a 1-rep-max front squat.

Time cap: 20 minutes

“Athletes will have 20 minutes from their declared start time to find a 1-rep-max front squat. Within the 20-minute window, athletes may make as many or as few attempts as they like.

The athlete’s score will be the load (in lb.) of their heaviest successful lift. In the event of a tie, the lighter athlete with the same successful lift will be placed above the heavier athlete.”

Affiliate Participation

On the CrossFit Games Instagram post sharing the two events in block 1, they also encouraged affiliates to perform the WODs “alongside the Games.” Lesson plans and versions of each day’s WOD will be provided by CrossFit HQ to facilitate events for larger groups.

Here is the list of requisite equipment needed for affiliates that would like to participate:

  • Barbells
  • Bumper plates
  • Pull-up bars
  • Squat racks
  • GHDs
  • Rowers
  • Jump ropes
  • HSPU wall space

There are 60 athletes — 30 men and 30 women — competing in the 2020 Games. Stage 1 will narrow the field down to just five men and five women, who will then compete in a Finals in California next month.
