Jeffrey Adler Beats Mat Fraser in Event 3 of the 2020 CrossFit Games

With the weight of the 2020 CrossFit Games Finals literally on their shoulders, here’s how the athletes fared in the CrossFit Total.

Event three of the 2020 CrossFit Games Finals had flavors of powerlifting, as athletes worked up to a max rep in the back squat, shoulder press, and deadlift. It was Jeffrey Adler who was able to total the most weight between the three lifts in the men’s division. Mat Fraser was right behind him. For the women, Tia-Clair Toomey racked up 890 pounds, beating Brooke Wells by six pounds.

CrossFit Total Highlights

In the process of out-lifting the Fittest Man on Earth®, Canada’s Adler also set personal records in all three lifts — five pounds on the back squat, two pounds on the shoulder press, and he pulled 567 pounds.

“There’s no gaming for this [event],” Adler told Niki Brazier in the post-event interview. “What you can lift is what you can lift. I’m pretty confident with heavy weight. I’m happy with these numbers; I haven’t been training strength these past few months.”

For Toomey, this win must feel like deja vu. In 2018, the last time the CrossFit Total was seen in the Games, Toomey bested Wells by five pounds. Toomey and Wells lifted 875 and 870 pounds respectively in 2018.

Kari Pearce had an impressive performance, too. She put up the heaviest shoulder press — out-pressing Toomey by 17 pounds. As a former gymnast, Pearce’s core strength stability is well-known and certainly helped keep her midline stable throughout the press.

More CrossFit Games Finals Events Ahead

As it stands, Fraser and Toomey are still handily leading their respective division. There are two events left today, Friday, Oct. 23, 2020, and so it’s too early to say any athlete is a shoo-in to win. Though, Fraser and Toomey are looking absolutely dominant.
