The largest inclusive CrossFit competition in Europe took place last weekend in Barcelona, Spain.

The third annual Wodcelona, held amidst Mediterranean palm trees alongside the beach, was home to over 1000 athletes competing in 32 categories. Competitors were a mix of individuals, teams, and masters, as well as 14 adaptive categories.

Some background: Marc Gil, the 2017 Wodapalooza champion and founder of the nonprofit Limited Edition Athletes, began the fitness festival in 2022 as a way to bring a fully inclusive competition to the city of Barcelona.

Held in partnership with Nike, the inaugural Wodcelona in 2022 hosted 800 athletes in over 16 categories. More than 10,000 people attended the festival throughout the weekend.

Only three years in, the event has grown to 1400 athletes, 800 volunteers, and thousands of spectators, both on-site and at home watching Wodcelona’s live feed.

2024 Wodcelona Highlights

Of the 1400 athletes that competed in the three-day event, some familiar names topped the leaderboards.

  • Kealan Henry competed in the Elite Male category, finishing fifth and snagging an event win.
  • Andra Moistus and Elena Carratala Sanahuja threw down with the Elite Females. Moistus won the division and Carratala Sanahuja took second.
  • Diana Pinchuk, winner of the Women’s RX division, almost made a clean sweep of the events, taking first on seven out of eight.
  • The Crazy Frogs came back to defend their title, which they did successfully in the Women’s Elite Team division.
  • In the Adaptive Seated 1 division, the top two males, Nikodem Przadka and Szymon Klimza, battled the entire weekend, trading first- and second-place event finishes. Przadka won with 532.5 points, with Klimza in a close second with 525.
  • Off the competition floor, Gabi Migała and Henrik Haapalainen hosted training sessions for the community.

The Big Picture

As CrossFit’s reach continues to grow, fully inclusive competitions like Wodcelona have been able to expand their adaptive divisions, giving more opportunity to all populations of people and allowing all divisions of athletes to compete alongside one another.

As Wodcelona is already in the planning stages for 2026, they look ahead with big ideas and plans to celebrate “humans having fun.”
